Planning a trip to the big boat show? And by big, we mean BIG! Garmin InReach Messenger Plus

Garmin’s newest SOS satellite communicator—the inReach Messenger Plus—now gives boaters the ability to send photo and voice messages even beyond cell service. With a battery life that can last for weeks, this two-way satellite communicator also has two-way texting, locating sharing and SOS capabilities. It is also water rated to IPX7 and can withstand incidental water exposure up to a meter in depth for up to 30 minutes. Seakeeper Ride 750 and 750 Quad

Seakeeper has two new Ride underway stabilization systems designed for boats from about 37 to 42 feet in length overall. The Seakeeper Ride 750 and 750 Quad join Seakeeper’s three existing Ride systems capable of eliminating up to 70 percent of pitch and roll while underway on boats as small as 19 feet length overall. The Ride 750 consists of two larger controllers, while the 750 Quad has four smaller controllers for transoms with restricted space.  Both the systems are designed with aluminum components, a deviation from previous products that use composite construction. Recon Trolling Motors From Lowrance and Simrad

New saltwater trolling motors from Lowrance and Simrad share the same model name—Recon—and possess the same design, including a brushless motor that operates on either 24 to 36 volts and produces 90 and 115 pounds of thrust, respectively. These manually deployed, electric-steered trolling motors boast a unique joystick remote called Freesteer. Incorporating a color LCD display, the remote is lightweight and wearable, providing 360 degrees of manual steering, as well as activation of automatic functions, including GPS-guided virtual anchoring.  system that holds boats within a 3-foot radius. Skyhawk Oversea Boat Monitoring

This American-made Skyhawk Oversea system is affordable, simple to install and practical for any vessel. It features a compact wireless hub that by itself provides location on demand and monitors vessel bearing to detect movement. A network of battery-powered RF wireless sensors is offered to monitor bilge-pump activity, battery voltage, shore power, temp/humidity/water, motion, door entry, and sound. All alerts and data come to the Oversea app via cellular network. Both the hub and sensors provide years of operation using standard replaceable batteries for continuous year-round monitoring with no drain on the boat’s batteries. Minn Kota Riptide Instinct Trolling Motor

Minn Kota’s top-of-the-line Riptide Instinct trolling motor features Quest brushless motor technology and push-button deploy and stow, the Riptide Instinct operates on either 24 volts for 90 pounds of thrust or 36 volts for 115 pounds of thrust. Shaft lengths include 60, 65, 87 and 100 inches. It also has a beefy composite shafts and pivot points, as well as real-time battery monitoring. Built-in i-Pilot and i-Pilot Link GPS enable guidance functionality such as Spot-Lock virtual anchoring. Control options include a wireless remote to drive the motor from anywhere in the boat. The new Bivy Stick Mesh from ACR Electronics, the first satellite messenger to integrate advanced LoRa-enabled mesh networking with the Iridium Satellite network, creating a seamless communication without relying on cellular coverage. This dual-mode connectivity proves ideal for cruising boaters, offering device-to-device message transmission significantly faster than traditional satellite communication. Its ability to relay messages through the mesh network ensures that communication is always possible. This device had not yet received FCC approval, but will be on display at the show. ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Electric Dinghy Outboard

The Spirit 1.0 Plus outboard from ePropulsion features a 1276 Wh battery, the largest available for a motor of this size. With a high-efficiency propeller design, the 48-volt Spirt 1.0 Plus can reach up to approximately 5.7 mph with a range of more than 7 miles and 1-hour-15-minute run time at full speed, according to ePropulsion. IC-M510BB Black-Box VHF Radio

All operations, including DSC, can be made from the CommandMic, allowing the VHF radio unit to be installed in an out-of-sight place and as far as 60 feet from the CommandMic. Up to three CommandMics can be connected, allowing it to double as an onboard intercom system. NMEA 2000 networking capabilities provide plug-and-play data communication with other electronics. Honda BF350

After a few years of maxing out with its 250 hp engine, the four-stroke pioneer has just come out with its largest engine to date, the all new BF350. Our full review is coming out in our January 2024 issue, but as one of the first to test it, we know the Honda 350 features a newly developed 5-liter-displacement block with a fully balanced, 60-degree offset crankshaft, built using the same alloy and strength specifications as the engine in the Acura NSX high-performance supercar, according to Honda. This eliminates the need for counter balancing the crankshaft and seamlessly integrates with the 60-degree V-8 powerhead design to minimize engine vibration and noise. Available in silver or white paint schemes, the Honda delivers its 350 prop-shaft horsepower using 86-octane gasoline (versus premium unleaded octane) at 5,500 rpm.

Volvo Penta is leading the way with its sterndrive, forward drive and pod technologies, and has also proven to be at the cutting edge of converting to electric power, as noted in its diesel-hybrid collaboration with Beneteau.

COX CXO300

COX continues to make diesel power a viable option in the outboard market, especially with its CXO300.

It’s definitely an option for outboard-powered yacht tenders where the owner wants to use the same fuel as the mothership.

Yamaha XTO 450

Yamaha boosted the power output of its V8 XTO 425 up to 450 hp, expanding its presence on ever-larger boats requiring multiple outboards as its power source. One of the benefits of the 450 is that the Yamaha XTO Offshore 450 boasts more charging power, featuring a three-phase, simultaneous charging system that produces up to 96 net amps per engine in neutral. This enables it to provide more power for high-demand devices, such as gyrostabilizers, air conditioning and sound systems. Formula will be introducing two new models at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show this week. To be clear, detailed models of the 457 Center Console Fish and 457 Center Console Sport will be on hand while top management describes the mission, design and details of the new boats. This occurs Wednesday, October 25, 2023, 1 PM on H Dock at the Bahia Mar marina part of the show.

The actual boats are slated to hit the water at the Miami International Boat Show, in February 2024.

Last summer, while visiting Formula’s HQ in Decatur, Indiana, I was given a preview of the new boats, and tour of the plugs and preliminary mockups of the boat. The embedded video shows a little bit of the time, work, creativity and craftsmanship that goes into creating a new model from an idea.

The 457 CCF and 457 CCS come in the wake of the success of the 387 CCF and 387 CCS which Formula debuted last year, and which I ran, side-by-side, from Florida to the Bahamas to test.

Like all Formula Boats, these new models are designed by John Adams, a man who draws sweet lines and hulls that ride smooth, fast and offer no surprises.

The center console world – media, builders, and consumers alike – were stunned and impressed by Formula’s recent introduction of the 387 Center Console Fish and Sport models, executing the ultimate in performance, ergonomics and amenities in the center console market.

At 45’7” LOA with a 13’9” beam, and powered by triple Mercury 600 Verados, the Formula 457 will impress all comers. Formula’s exclusive designer John Adams, joined by designer Michael Young, has delivered yet another new platform in the center console world which embodies the evocative yet instantly recognizable Formula masterpiece of form and function, while opening new vistas for established Formula boaters.

The open bow features dual forward-facing sun lounges with outer armrests, a center flip-down armrest with drink holders and insulated storage below. Wrap-around bow seating includes removable cushions and fiberglass seat lids with storage below, a removeable center seat, two tip-out trash cans, plus a power adjustable table for snacks or meals, convertible to a sun lounge with filler cushion. An additional bench seat folds out from the sun lounges for dining in the round. Sidewall and cockpit deck storage abounds, and starboard washdown pumps and hoses are at the ready to keep up with the action.

The Center Console Fish is a superb battlewagon born to conquer the canyons. With dual 50-gallon, pressurized live wells aft, port and starboard fish boxes with macerators and available freezer plates, and premium GEMLUX® outriggers, this CCF is built to score your trophies! At the transom wall, the roomy, double-wide flip-down bench seat offers another place to sit and enjoy the adventure, and both port and starboard side doors plus starboard transom door allow for easy catch access or water activities.

Choose to add an upper helm station on the CCF if you wish to boost your angling game! Equipped with its own Mercury DTS and joystick JPO controls, a 7” Mercury VesselView display, 19” Garmin or Raymarine widescreen color chartplotter, and handsome yet sturdy stainless steel steering wheel with knob, you have all control from above. Portable devices remain powered up with a dual USB port and wireless charging mount, and an overhead Rockford Fosgate remote controls two 6 ½” speakers powered by a 200W amp to keep the ambiance while you’re on the hunt. Be sure stop by Furuno’s booth and see its two newest fishfinders—the 5.7-inch FCV600 and 8.4-inch FCV800. Both can drive either a chirp or a dual-frequency continuous-wave transducer, allowing fishermen to configure each unit to suit their needs. In fact, the FCV-800 features dual transducer ports, allowing for the simultaneous use of chirp and continuous-wave channels. Both come in a sleek, with rubber keys and a robust rotary knob controller. The soft-touch keys are inclined at the top and bottom, making them easy to press. Don’t miss the new IC-M510BB, which represents the latest in VHF technology from Icom America. All operations including DSC, can be made from the CommandMic, allowing the VHF radio unit can be installed out-of-sight place and as far 60 feet from the CommandMic.
