The Miami Innovation Awards recognize manufacturers and suppliers who bring new, innovative products to market.

The Miami Innovation Awards judges’ committee was comprised of eight BWI members who perform product testing throughout the year and have specific expertise in marine products and equipment. The judges’ committee included Ben Stein (Chair), Tim Murphy (Co-Chair), Kelsey Bonham, Kevin Falvey, Alan Jones, Adam Quandt, Gary Reich, and Tony Esposito.

The 2024 Miami Innovation Award winners are:

Cabin Cruisers, Motor Yachts & Trawler

Boston Whaler, 365 Conquest – “The unsinkable Boston Whaler 365 Conquest proved unbeatable in its category. Drawer style seats, point of use storage and moving the galley topside makes for an offshore boat of great versatility,” said Kevin Falvey.

Center Console / Walkaround Fishing Boats

HCB Yachts, HCB 48′ Campeón – “The HCB 48 Campeón takes the idea of the custom boat to a new level with an ultra-widescreen display that can be customized to the owner’s desires and a one-touch digital switching system that powers up only the systems specified by the skipper,” Gary Reich noted. “The build quality and attention to detail overshadowed entrants in the category.”

Consumer Electronics, Mobile Applications and Software

Skyhawk Oversea, Skyhawk Oversea –“This is an easy, affordable boat monitoring system that requires no hardwiring or technical knowledge,” said Tony Esposito.

Cuddy Cabins, Bowriders, and Deck Boats

Boston Whaler, 210 Vantage – “This dual console, 21-footer with its convertible port side lounge brings many of the features of much bigger boats to this 21-foot boat,” said Tim Murphy.

Deck Equipment

Shadow-Caster LED Lighting, Eagle Ray Light Bar – “From a hyper-focused long-distance spot to a diffused flood light, the Eagle Ray Light Bar offers flexibility and low energy usage in one simple installation,” noted Murphy.

Honorable mention: MasterCraft Boat Company, Power Board Racks

Electric Motor / Battery Powered Propulsion / Hybrids and Boats

Nautical Ventures, ePropulsion eLite – “There are other electric outboards on the market, but the ePropulsion eLite beats them all in simplicity, weight and price point,” said Kelsey Bonham. “This is perfect for a thrifty cruiser, a savvy kayaker and many in between.”

Fishing Equipment, Gear & Tackle

Taco Marine, Open Water Internal & Collapsible Carbon Fiber Outrigger Poles – “Taco’s carbon fiber outrigger poles are lightweight collapsible, easy to ship and can be setup without tools. Go fish!” exclaimed Alan Jones. In stock at Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s

Inboard Engines

Pleasurecraft Engine Group, PCM ZZ8S and ZZ8R Engines – “The highest performing marine engines have historically demanded the highest-octane fuel. PCM blows that paradigm out of the water with the ZZ8 engine series which makes gobs of torque and a herd of horsepower on 89 octane fuel,” noted Falvey.

Personal Gear, Soft Goods

SeaSucker LLC, Basking Bag – Esposito noted, “It solves a real-world boating problem. Who among us hasn’t had to turn about to retrieve an overboard trash bag?”

We’re in Miami and environs a lot. It’s unavoidable, given the amount of year-round weather friendly to boats. But editors do not live on boat tests alone. Often, we end-up eating wherever’s most convenient before we have to catch a tide (or a flight). Still, over the years, we’ve developed some favorite places to break bread. So, if you’re in the 305 for the Miami International Boat Show you’d do well to enjoy a meal at any of the places on our list.

El Carajo

2465 SW 17th Ave.
305-856-2424
el-carajo.com

Don’t leave Miami without trying El Carajo’s Cuban tapas style café. Make reservations and go with the custom paella, choosing just the seafood and sausage ingredients you love. They have. A lobster bisque and a Galician soup with smoked pork, ham hock, bacon, Serrano ham, white beans and potatoes. Galician octopus in a butter sauce? Oh yea! Fried cod or chorizo croquettes are gonna go down fast, too. Comfortably priced for Miami. Don’t let the gas station front put you off.

Meraki Greek food in Miami
The atmosphere is intimate and friendly, and the food authentic Greek, at Meraki in downtown Miami. Courtesy Meraki

Meraki Greek Bistro

142 SE 1st Ave.
786-773-1535
merakidowntown.com

I happened upon Meraki Greek Bistro with Editor-in-Chief, Kevin Falvey, and some industry friends about six years ago. The vibe is relaxed, the food is Mediterranean and the staff is friendly and welcoming. Meraki is out of the boat show bustle. The food is authentic Greek and good, from Tzatziki to Keftedes, and from Spanokopita to Octopus. Yamas!

Toni’s Sushi Bar

1208 Washington Ave.
305-673-9368
tonisushi.com

This is a regular Miami meal for our team. Every year. Every kind of sushi and sashimi in the world, artfully prepared and served with exemplary style. A full bar and the finest service and atmosphere available in Miami. We liked the crunchy sushi, Wagyu Beef rolls and perfectly sliced and served sashimi. Or go all in for the Chilean Sea Bass dinner.

Mike's at Venetia food for the boat show
Known for great sandwiches, Mike’s at Venetia serves a diverse menu. Courtesy Mike’s at Venetia

Mike’s at Venetia

555 NE 15th Street, 9th Floor
305-374-5731
mikesmiami.com

Close to, and high above the Venetian Marina show docks is Mike’s at Venetia. “Mike’s“ is an Irish pub—with a panoramic view of Biscayne Bay—where you can unpretentiously enjoy a bucket of beer bottles or a fine aged scotch; a great wine or masterfully-mixed cocktails. Mingle with locals, showgoers and exhibitors alike. The menu is pub fare, ranging from appies, burgers and pizza to steaks and fish. Mike’s can be loud, but in an everyone is enjoying themselves way. We hit it at least once during the show.

Stubborn Seed

101 Washington Ave.
786-322-5211
stubbornseed.com

Coal Kissed Kussi Oyster, local wahoo, caviar macaroon, maitake mushroom risotto are just a few of the delicacies on the 11-course tasting menu-the perfect way to get to know the capabilities of this Michelin-rated fine restaurant. Pricey? You ask and you’re buying a new boat? Go ahead, you can’t take it with you.

Bella Cuba food
A selection of menu items from Bella Cuba, an easy walk from the Miami Beach Convention Center. Courtesy Bella Cuba

Bella Cuba Restaurant

1659 Washington Ave.
305-672-7466
bellacubamiamibeach.com

A great spot for lunch. Walk from the convention center. Look over your shoulder at Bella Cuba and you may be dining with high-powered execs from the Boating industry who strolled over for lunch before heading back for the afternoon rush at show. The authentic Cuban fare is served prompt and delicious. Try Grandma’ Chicken Noodle Soup or the Palomilla Steak. Great Cuban sandwiches, of course. Medium price. Just a great place.

Garcia’s Seafood Grille and Fish Market

398 NW N River Drive
305-375-0765
garciasmiami.com

Located on the Miami River, an interesting waterway to ply by boat, Garcia’s is the kind of place you tell people about before they even ask you if you know any good restaurants. The whole yellowtail snapper is consistently the best we’ve had. And, it’ s always on the menu, whereas availability of this delicious dish is sporadic in many places. Go for the ambiance, go for the food, go to Garcia’s.

If you’re in the market for any boat, motor or marine accessory, you need to attend the big Miami International Boat Show this year (February 14-18, 2024). You’ll see a mind-boggling number of today’s coolest boating products, including the hottest new marine electronics, not only at company booths, but also on boats and at retailers exhibiting at the show. Here are marine electronics you must see while you’re at the Miami International Boat Show—MIBS, for short.

Simrad NSX Ultrawide

Simrad NSX Ultrawide

Simrad will debut its spectacular new multifunction displays at MIBS—the NSX Ultrawide series engineered to deliver the benefits of dual screens in just one display. Available in 12- and 15-inch (diagonal) screens, the revolutionary aspect ratio provides the best view to explore the latest NSX operating system. Boating anglers can create unique split-screen views on the MFDs. What’s more, the bundled C-Map Discover X charts for North America and Canada are optimized for the new Ultrawide display’s high-pixel density. Extra detail can be added with an upgrade to the optional Reveal X shaded-relief and satellite imagery charting. The NSX Ultrawide is packed with familiar features of the NSX, and it easily integrates with other Simrad electronics, including sonar technologies across a wide range of transducers. $2,749 for the 12-inch model, $3,399 for the 15-inch; simrad-yachting.com.

Garmin EchoMap Ultra 2 Series

The Garmin exhibit at MIBS is a must-see destination for boaters and anglers. While you’re there, check out the EchoMap Ultra 2 chart-plotter series, designed to offer advanced features for nearshore anglers, including wireless networking, multi-band GPS and a new user interface. The plotters are available in 10-inch (106sv) or 12-inch (126sv) sunlight-readable touchscreens with keyed assist. The Ultra 2 series features the new Ultra High-Definition (UHD) scanning sonar and comes preloaded with Garmin Navionics+ mapping with a one-year subscription for daily updates. The wireless networking lets you share sonar, waypoints and routes with other onboard EchoMap Ultra 2 or UHD2 chart plotters, eliminating the need for cable connections. There’s also a screen-recording feature accessible via the ActiveCaptain app that can capture what’s on the chart-plotter screen to share via text or social media. The Ultra 2 chart plotters are available with a GT56UHD all-in-one transducer that provides Garmin chirp traditional sonar and UHD ClearVu and SideVu scanning images of what’s below and to the sides of the boat. The new series also supports the full lineup of Garmin’s award-winning LiveScope live-scanning-sonar systems. The new models range from $1,899.99 to $3,099.99. Airmar Medium Ultra-Wide-Beam Transducers

Airmar Medium Ultra-Wide-Beam Transducers

If you’re a saltwater angler, you must see Airmar Technology Corp.’s new line of three medium-frequency ultra-wide transducers. These single-frequency, chirp-ready 1 kW, 60 to 100 kHz transducers feature a unique concave ceramic array design that delivers an incredible ultra-wide-beam width ranging from 57 to 73 degrees port and starboard, and a 16-degree average beam width fore and aft. Ideally suited for anglers seeking species down to 1,300 feet, the new medium B175MW (bronze housing) and SS175MW (stainless-steel housing) transducers are low-profile, tilted-element models that also include fast-response water-temperature sensors. The TM185MW ultrawide transom-mount version uses the same ceramic array in a urethane-bodied transducer with a stainless-steel transom bracket. Tilted-element models are available in zero-, 12- and 20-degree tilt angles. When the new medium ultra¬wide models are paired with other popular Airmar models, such as the B275LHW, anglers are equipped with a broad set of frequencies (low, medium-wide and high-wide) to find fish deep and shallow. JL Audio HTML Interface

JL Audio HTML Interface

Want to learn about the latest in marine audio control systems? Stop by JL Audio’s booth and ask about the new NMEA 2000-connected MediaMaster HTML interface for JL Marine MediaMaster marine source units. This gives boaters full control of their premium sound systems from Simrad, Lowrance or Garmin MFDs. Historically, MFDs provided limited compatibility and control for sound systems, which made having an audio-system control head necessary. This HTML interface ends the need for a dedicated audio-system controller, moving control and management to the MFD. It also reduces clutter at the helm, freeing space for installing other equipment on the dash. $499.99; jlaudio.com.

Raymarine-Rhodan Integration

Head over to the Raymarine booth to see how Axiom MFDs can now integrate with Rhodan Marine’s bow-mount saltwater trolling motors, which range from 12 to 36 volts in shaft lengths up to 108 inches. Anglers can control Rhodan trolling motors from an Axiom 2 Pro or XL MFD just as they would from the Rhodan key fob. The integration allows anglers to increase and decrease thrust, and adjust the motor’s direction, which is clearly shown on the Axiom display. With the Hold Heading mode, boaters can maintain a heading and adjust it in 1-degree increments. The system can also maintain position over a fishing spot. Raymarine’s integration with Rhodan can -automatically detect whether the trolling motor is stowed or deployed. This innovative feature enables Axiom to steer the trolling motor when it is active, but then control a Raymarine Evolution autopilot when the Rhodan motor is stowed. Rhodan integration with Axiom requires upgrading to Raymarine’s LightHouse 4.5 operating system. To learn more about this system, visit raymarine.com or rhodanmarine.com. Icom IC-M510BB Black-Box VHF Radio

While you’re at MIBS, be sure to check out Icom’s new IC-M510BB, which represents the latest in VHF technology, letting you expand your VHF accessibility throughout the boat. All operations, including DSC, can be made from the CommandMic, allowing the VHF radio unit to be installed in an out-of-sight place and as far as 60 feet from the CommandMic. Up to three CommandMics can be connected to the IC-M510BB, allowing it to double as an onboard intercom system on large boats. NMEA 2000 networking capabilities provide plug-and-play data communication with other electronics, such as an MFD. The radio can also share GNSS/GPS position data, AIS, and DSC calls with other onboard equipment. The unit has a last-call voice-recording function that automatically saves up to two minutes of a recent incoming call. A built-in 15-watt amplifier increases the audio output to an external hailer/speaker, and there’s a built-in hailer function that also sounds foghorn patterns. $799.95; icomamerica.com. Shop West Marine for more models

SiriusXM Fish Mapping App

SiriusXM Fish Mapping App

Stop by SiriusXM Marine’s booth to learn more about the satellite-delivered Fish Mapping data service that provides detailed fishing and weather information directly on a boat’s MFD to help find fish and stay safe. While you’re there ask about the new Fish Mapping app available for no additional cost to subscribers. It provides access to the same eight dedicated fishing features available on an MFD, plus two additional app-exclusive features: 1) historical data that lets you observe how currents, temperature contours, plankton fronts and other data have moved over the past few days, and 2) ocean-current movements using arrows to show direction, with the speed reflected in the size of the arrows (the larger, the faster the currents). The data is overlaid directly on your chart so you can see information relative to the location of your boat. $109.99 per month; siriusxm.com.

Skyhawk Oversea Boat Monitoring

Skyhawk Oversea Boat Monitoring

Skyhawk Oversea will make its world debut at the 2024 Miami Boat International Show (Convention Center Booth 3237), unveiling an innovative, American-made boat monitoring system that’s affordable, simple to install and practical for any vessel. The system features a compact wireless hub that by itself provides location on demand and monitors vessel bearing to detect movement. A network of battery powered RF wireless sensors is offered to monitor bilge pump activity, battery voltage, shore power, temp/humidity/water, motion, door entry and sound. All alerts and data come to the Oversea app via cellular network. Both the hub and sensors provide years of operation using standard replaceable batteries for continuous year-round monitoring with no drain on the boat’s batteries. Installation and setup are easy — no hub wiring needed and no sensor pairing required. Skyhawk Oversea will launch with pricing starting at $249 for the hub; $389 for the hub plus three sensors; a cellular subscription also is required; oversea.boats.

After nine days of boot 2024, the boating and water sports industry can take positive stock of the world’s largest yachts and water sports trade fair. “We had many new contacts at our stands and were able to conclude numerous deals. The right visitors ensured very good sales figures in the boat sector as well as for motors/engines, boards, diving equipment and accessories. boot 2024 provided the perfect start to the season,” explained exhibitor spokesperson and trade fair President Robert Marx.

Despite very difficult conditions – from the onset of winter to strikes – boot Düsseldorf once again demonstrates its excellent international standing in the industry. Accordingly, Wolfram Diener, CEO & President of Messe Düsseldorf, is very pleased with the positive outcome of the trade fair: “With 214,000 visitors from 120 countries, we have achieved a good result and can be more than satisfied in these challenging times. Customers and exhibitors have a unique platform for networking here. It’s great, we were once again able to underpin boot Düsseldorf’s leading position with an inspiring business atmosphere in the exhibition halls. I wish our exhibitors a good business year 2024.”

boot Düsseldorf succeeded in increasing both its proportion of trade visitors (from 18% to over 21%) as well as the internationality of its customers (from 23.7 to 34.3%) and it is the only water sports fair in the world that attracts people from all continents. The majority of visitors were interested in sailing yachts (42%), followed by powerboat fans (38.2%), divers (27%), charterers (11.7%) and surfers (9.8%). Water sports clothing and tourism were also in high demand at boot 2024 and were very popular with 25.7% (clothing) and 19.4% (tourism/travel). A high percentage (94%) of the visitors were extremely positive about the trade fair.

Exhibitors Speak

Hans Roeland summarized the trade fair success for Sea Ray: “One look at our stand says more than a thousand words! It was packed! We did excellent business and gained new customers throughout the boot 2024 trade fair. We were able to get visitors interested in our stand and conclude many deals.”

Hanjo Runde, CEO of HanseYachts: “We were able to present many new products at boot Düsseldorf. We were overwhelmed by the rush of over 10,000 visitors to our sailing and motor yachts, and our visitors enjoyed boot just as much as we did.”

Simon Clare, Executive Director of Marketing Princess Yachts, commented: “boot Düsseldorf is the perfect kick start to the boating year. The biggest show on the marine calendar, it is also one of the most compelling showcases for the industry and we were delighted to contribute to that this year with one of the strongest line-ups we’ve ever had at the show. With four of our largest models on display in an eight boat line up, we had almost 600-feet of Princess models on show. We were also very proud to have the largest vessel at the show with the X95 making her show debut. Being the first show of the year, boot is often a good barometer for how the market may perform for the rest of the year and we’ve certainly been encouraged by how busy we have been at the Princess stand and by the quality of the conversations we’ve been having. Both the sales completed at the show and the number of conversations to continue later certainly back that up so we are optimistic for the year ahead. It is always a spectacular event for visitors and exhibitors alike and this year has certainly been no exception.”

Michael Müller, CEO of Bavaria, reported very good trade fair results: “We were delighted with the high visitor footfall at our two stands in Hall 1 for powerboats and in Hall 16 for sailing yachts, especially at the weekends, but also on weekdays. And even more so about the consistently positive feedback from visitors to boot 2024 about our yachts. We also used boot 2024 to exchange ideas with our suppliers and new contacts from the yacht industry. We would like to thank the trade fair company and the boot Düsseldorf team for their professional organization of the trade fair and, after nine days in Düsseldorf, we can now look forward to 2024 with confidence.”

Mathis Kaufmann, Product Manager at MARES, added: “For MARES, boot is generally important for presenting our current range and new products. We can also answer many questions about our new products, especially for trade visitors. We were able to use boot 2024 as a very good stage for our 75th company anniversary.”

According to Stefan Frauscher, Managing Director of Frauscher Bootswerft: “Thanks to two world premieres and the trend towards electromobility, we can look back on a very successful boot 2024.

Patric Polch, Managing Director of boote polch GmbH, stated: “We are very satisfied with the outcome. boot Düsseldorf is particularly important because this trade fair kicks off the water sports season and appeals to an enormous number of people thanks to its huge media presence. The mix of visitors to the trade fair fits in perfectly with our product range – in addition to many important domestic customers, a high level of internationality was also noticeable. At the same time, we noticed that the expertise of the customers was extremely high and the quality of the discussions was first-class. We registered far more demand at boot 2024 than in the previous year. It was particularly busy at the weekends, but we also welcomed many well-informed water sports enthusiasts from Germany and many European countries during the week.”

Finally, boot is back – the relief is clearly noticeable in the water sports community and among the Düsseldorf trade fair organisers. What was the annual highlight for the industry until 2020 had to take a forced break due to the pandemic. The longing was all the greater for boot to finally be launched again.

Now it’s boot Düsseldorf 2023. From 21 to 29 January, just before the Rhineland’s great days, a magical nine days of trade fair await with numerous boat and yacht premieres, a new diving tower, the sustainability forum “blue innovation dock”, holiday regions from all over the world in the “Destination Seaside”, tips for beginners and professional sailors and with wingfoiling and wingsurfing the hottest current water sports trends await their fans.

In figures this means: over 1,500 exhibitors in 16 exhibition halls on an area of 31 football pitches, translated into square metres: 220,000! Companies from 68 countries are on board. Nine hands-on activities and theme worlds invite sports enthusiasts and sea lovers to put their hand to the tiller themselves, get on the board, dive in, paddle or simply listen to exciting reports and exchange ideas with like-minded people. To ensure your personal participation slot, every active person should register for their desired sport at boot.de.

In the 54 years of its existence, boot Düsseldorf has also repeatedly proven itself to be a driver of innovation. As early as the 1970s and 1980s there were numerous forums on the subject of marine research. Diving pioneer Jacques-Yves Cousteau – “The prerequisite for knowledge is curiosity” – had chosen boot as his presentation platform and proclaimed here the protection of the seas as the declared goal of divers. In 2023, boot once again proves to be the initiator and motor for marine and water protection as well as a sustainable strategy in boat building and marina expansion. The “blue innovation dock” in Hall 10 will provide impetus for EU-wide measures over the nine days of the fair. The “love your ocean” stand in Hall 14 will also delight little explorers. There will be large measuring instruments from marine research, a microplastics lab and an algae lab to explore. And with the “ocean tribute Award”, whose list of winners also includes Boris Herrmann with his Malizia team, boot Düsseldorf, together with the Monegasque Prince Albert II Foundation and the German Ocean Foundation, have created an internationally highly regarded and renowned prize. This year the “ocean tribute Award” will again be presented live in front of an audience on 23 January. The laudatory speech for the winner will be held by the well-known actor and ocean activist Hannes Jaenicke.
