Boston Whaler proves the adage that good things come in small packages with its 210 Vantage, the most compact boat ever in this line of dual-console boats. While boat dealers in the Great Lakes had been clamoring for a smaller Vantage, this boat will be at home anywhere thanks to its versatility. This model includes enhanced protection from the elements with a full wraparound windshield and a dam to close off the wind whistling through the walk-through to the bow. Those boating on big bodies of water such as Lake Michigan will also feel safer thanks to Boston Whaler’s unsinkability, made possible due to its foam-filled construction process, which also adds to the boat’s rigidity and sound-deadening properties.

The floor plan allows owners to add a large portside lounge ($4,690) with a three-position backrest for sitting forward, backward, or lying flat for sunning. It also creates a large underseat storage compartment for tubes or ski gear, and an optional ski-tow pylon makes it watersports-ready. Up front is a pair of bowrider seats that score high in kid containment with high gunwales and well-positioned grab rails. A side-mount table ($2,006) can be added for dining or card playing and also includes a filler cushion to create another sunning location. Another table can be added in the cockpit to further up the 210 Vantage’s entertainment quotient.

The Fishing Package ($1,943) gives anglers two extra rod holders for a total of four in the gunwales and three at the transom. Also included is an 18-gallon livewell, a lockable rod locker in the starboard-side console for up to 7-foot rods, a fish box with an overboard pump-out, and a raw-water washdown for cleanups. The extra-long platformettes on the transom extend past the outboard engine, and thanks to the flip-down jump seats at the stern corners, they form roomy casting platforms for the anglers in your crew, adding to the boat’s versatility.

Engine choices range from the 200 hp Mercury powering our test boat up to a Mercury 250 Verado, which adds some extra oomph and will push top speed past 50 mph.

Overview

The big-dual-console category is hotly contested. We’re talking about 30-something-size DCs with twin- and even triple-outboard power, boats developed for the mission of taking out a group of family and/or friends, with hulls that can safely challenge big water.

Yet, versatility is the secret sauce behind the popularity of DC models, and big dual-consoles such as the new 330 Vantage from Boston Whaler offer versatility in spades. This is a boat from which you can stage a gathering, enjoy watersports, swim and snorkel, fish offshore, cruise long distances, and even spend the night in a pinch.

The dash can be equipped with either a single Simrad 16-inch multifunction display or twin 12-inch displays. Courtesy Boston Whaler

Then, of course, there is Whaler’s legendary unsinkable hull construction to help ensure the safety of everyone on board. On top of all this, the 330 offers superb performance, with a top speed exceeding 57 mph in our test with twin Mercury 400 hp Verado V-10 outboards.

Successor to the Boston Whaler 320 Vantage, the 330 offers the availability of a windshield that extends to the hardtop, as well as a standard half-windshield version. We recommend the full-height windshield option ($8,154), and here’s why: We stayed out too long on test day and were caught in an afternoon deluge. We closed the middle portion of the windshield, a task made easy by a new hinge system that renders the expansive section of tempered glass as light as a feather, then secured the walk-through door. The result was a dry and comfy passage, with the dual-wiper system maintaining good visibility. If you want just a bit of fresh air after it stops raining, open the motorized vent atop the full windshield.

Interior and Accessories

The port console is larger than the starboard side, creating a more expansive step-down head compartment than you might otherwise imagine. Accessible via a large door opposite the double-wide port-console seating, it includes a wet shower, VacuFlush toilet, and vanity with a countertop sink and a wood-grain cabinet below, LED lighting, and a tinted fixed skylight. Vents usher in fresh air, with an optional air-conditioning system ($13,467) for both interiors, as well as the helm.

The starboard console interior features a settee that converts into a cozy berth, wood-grain cabinets, fresh-air vents, and a tinted fixed skylight, as well as LED lights, for illumination. Both console interiors sport wood flooring.

On the previous version of this boat, a prep center occupied the starboard area abaft the captain’s chair. However, a settee resides in this space aboard the 330 Vantage.

There is an option for a transom prep center ($4,664) that includes a solid-surface top, sink, faucet, and a drawer-style fridge. You can add a 120-volt grill for $3,527. Without the prep center, a foldout transom bench expands the seating possibilities.

A 27-gallon livewell in the starboard quarter, along with up to 14 rod holders and three big insulated in-sole fish lockers, enhance the 330’s angling capabilities.

The portside seating consists of two facing seats with a compact flip-up table with an option for a full-size pedestal table ($2,025). But with the tables stowed, you can convert this area to an aft- or forward-facing lounger.

An expansive hardtop protects the mid-cockpit. A pair of optional hatches ($3,227) will usher in fresh air. An optional motorized SureShade ($13,812) telescopes from the hardtop over the aft cockpit.

The dash boasts a pair of Simrad 12-inch multifunction displays for navigating, finding fish, monitoring engine parameters, and controlling onboard systems such as the optional Seakeeper 3 gyrostabilizer ($77,303). There’s also a single Simrad 16-inch display, if you prefer. The swiveling captain’s chair is height adjustable and has armrests and a flip-up bolster. The throttle controls and joystick lay within a natural reach, which makes handling easy.

The 330 bow seating includes a pair of inviting forward-facing loungers. Add the filler cushion to create an expansive sun pad. Replace the filler cushion with the optional bow table ($2,951) to enjoy a picnic at the sandbar. Or use the optional bow ladder ($875) hidden next to the windlass in the anchor locker to take a dip, and when you climb back aboard, wash the sand away from your feet with the handy pullout shower. With the optional water heater ($1,346), you can take a warm shower.

The starboard-side door in the cockpit features a detachable boarding ladder to go snorkeling or take a dip. A foldout handle gives you a nice grip when climbing back aboard. The door also makes short work of hauling in a big fish and eases boarding from a floating dock.

A number of other models compete with Whaler in the 33ish-foot DC category, so you might want to shop around. One of the other leaders is the Pursuit DC 326 dual-console ($458,480 base model). It’s a foot shorter but a half-foot wider in the beam. It’s available with a full windshield and an integrated hardtop, well-appointed console interiors, a starboard-side boarding door, and a summer galley abaft the helm seat. Twin Yamaha F300 outboards pushed the Pursuit DC 326 to a top speed of 48.5 mph in our test.

If you are shopping around among the many big dual-consoles on the market today, you really can’t afford to overlook the new Boston Whaler 330 Vantage.

High Points

  • Your choice of half- or full-height windshield.
  • Asymmetrical interior allows for a roomy head compartment in the port console.
  • Moderate-deep-V-hull design offers a smooth ride and great stability at rest.

Low Points

  • The mechanism for the detachable boarding ladder for the side door is a toe-stubber.
  • Opening the hatches in the hardtop is a bit of a stretch, even for a 6-foot-tall crewmember.

Overview

When it’s time to design a new model, Boston Whaler uses input from a variety of sources, including Whaler dealers and owners. The strength of that process shows in the new 210 Vantage dual-console. This is a “right-size” family boat that’s small enough to tow behind a midsize SUV or pickup, but large enough to allow its occupants to move about freely and safely while fishing, towing toys, and exploring. We ran 210 Vantage Hull No. 5, powered by a 250 hp Mercury Verado V-8, on a choppy January day on Chesapeake Bay, but more on that later.

Interior and Accessories

A big part of the design’s success lies in the asymmetrical consoles. The port console extends to almost to the hull’s centerline, providing shoulder room inside, while the running bottom’s 20-degree deadrise provides depth for 4 feet, 2 inches of headroom for the portable toilet with deck pump-out ($1,568). This also allows for a broad portside lounge in the bow that seats two facing forward, if they know each other well. The U-shaped bow seating offers insulated storage underneath and encircles an optional table ($2,006) that stores in a dedicated rack in the port console. The starboard lounge and its back ingeniously form one curved lift-up unit hinged at the top for excellent access to storage within, which extends back into the starboard (helm) console and offers optional fishing-rod racks (part of the Fishing Package, $1,943).

Boston Whaler 210 Vantage cockpit seating
Our test boat sported the optional double-wide convertible lounge. Courtesy Boston Whaler

A tempered-glass windshield wraps completely around both consoles. The helm offers hydraulic power steering, side control for throttle and shift, a choice of factory-installed Simrad electronic displays with 9-inch ($3,567) or 12-inch ($5,249) screens, a Simrad VHF radio ($1,018), and a JL Audio stereo with four speakers ($2,231), plus Mercury VesselView Mobile engine monitoring and Active Trim. The skipper gets a custom helm seat with a pedestal, slide and flip-up bolster. During our sea trial, we found the helm and sightlines comfortable either sitting or leaning with the bolster flipped up. The only weather-protection option is a well-engineered folding Bimini top with boot ($2,129). It remained firmly planted during our breezy test day.

To port, a similar pedestal seat comes standard, but our test boat sported the optional double-wide convertible lounge ($4,690) with a multiposition back and storage beneath. It would be valuable not only when facing forward underway, but also facing aft for watching a skier or socializing with people sitting in the stern jump seats. It also converts to a full sun lounge. A cockpit table is optional ($1,649). The design team borrowed the transom layout from the Dauntless models: a central surface flanked by jump seats that fold down to form a casting deck or nonskid access to the two swim platforms. The central surface holds two cup holders on either side of three vertical fishing-rod holders. The central one holds the optional ski pylon ($2,633).  The jump seats conceal access to wiring and batteries. Two platforms make boarding easy from floating docks. The starboard swim platform holds a covered telescoping swim ladder with a stainless-steel grab rail for boarding from the water.

The helm offers hydraulic power steering, side control for throttle and shift, a choice of factory-installed Simrad electronic displays. Courtesy Boston Whaler

The optional Fishing Package includes an 18-gallon lighted livewell under the aft seat of the port lounge, a raw-water washdown, lockable storage for rods up to 7 feet long in the console, and two additional gunwale-mounted rod holders. Notably, the space to starboard aft of the helm chair is intentionally empty. Though it could hold an extra cooler or a tackle box, the open space allows for easy movement around the cockpit, whether handling fish or water toys.

Shopping? See and inspect Grady-White’s Freedom 215 ($123,240 base boat, plus a Yamaha F250 with IDES—integrated digital electric steering—in Classic White). Standard are a portable head, Bimini with front and side curtains (drop is optional), and a stereo. The base 210 Vantage with a white 250 Mercury V-8 Digital Throttle and Shift is $129,123.

Engine

The 210 Vantage rides a 20-degree running bottom with paired lifting strakes that, with the Active Trim and manual use of the trim tabs, allowed for comfortable, dry running on our test day’s choppy water. Wide reverse chines keep the hull stable at rest. Those wide chines, by the way, don’t cause the hull to slap when coming down off waves due to a designed-in curve on each inside edge rather than a hard angle. The big, white V-8 Verado hustled our tester from zero to 30 mph in 7 seconds, despite a headwind against the Bimini top in its boot. It gave the boat a wide range of efficient speeds: 18 to 33 mph (3,250 to 4,500 rpm), with a top speed of 48.3 mph. Choose this engine for full loads of people, coolers and towed toys. That said, according to Mercury’s performance reports on Boston Whaler’s website, Mercury’s 200 and 225 hp V-6 engines provide plenty of performance for most uses, with lower prices and somewhat better fuel economy. As always, think through the way you’d use this boat, and apply due diligence before making a decision. Either way, this new multipurpose dual-console fits neatly into an open niche in Boston Whaler’s lineup. The model is going to make a lot of water-loving families very happy.

How We Tested

  • Engine: Single 250 hp Mercury V-8
  • Drive/Prop: Outboard/14.5″ x 17″ Enertia 3-blade stainless steel
  • Gear Ratio: 1.75:1 Fuel load: 75 gal. Water Load: 0 gal. Crew Weight: 380 lb.

High Points

  • Convertible transom changes from seats to a casting platform and serves well the 210 Vantage’s multiple missions.
  • There’s enough headroom in the port console for a tall adult to sit comfortably on the portable toilet (with pump-out).
  • The storage layout in the starboard console is ingenious, including its front-opening door and horizontal rod holders.

Low Points

  • Add a tray for small accessories such as a cellphone and sunglasses in the port console door, just like the one in the helm console to starboard.
  • The head compartment would be improved by the addition of ventilation and a tray on the back shelf to hold toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and cleaning supplies.

Overview

The 280 Dauntless is the flagship of Boston Whaler’s Dauntless bay-boat lineup, and it delivers a high-quality fishing platform adorned with family-friendly creature comforts. Designed with a 9-foot beam and a shallow deadrise that tapers to 18 degrees at the transom, the 280 Dauntless is meant to be a stable casting platform that floats in skinny water. Despite its 28-foot length, Boston Whaler claims it can float with the engines trimmed up in just 1 foot, 6 inches of water. With the flatter running surface, it’s not going to be a tippy boat when anglers drop lines or cast from one side or the other.

Interior and Accessories

While the 280 Dauntless has plenty of fishy bona fides, including the 19-gallon transom livewell, seven total rod holders, and recessed grab rails and cleats to reduce snags, what really sets it apart is the spacious seating. The doublewide helm seat has flip-down armrests and flip-up bolsters, so you can sit or stand while driving the boat. It can be electrically actuated to convert to a simple leaning post at the helm while creating two plush aft-facing seats for the crew. Combine those with the cushioned transom bench that lifts out of the aft casting deck, and you’ve created a cockpit conversation pit.

The creature comforts extend to the bow with the spacious forward-facing sun lounge complete with flip-up armrests that sits forward of the center console. The hatches on the opposing raised stowage lockers in the bow have removable cushions to create another conversation pit forward.

The 280 Dauntless has several great options, from a Seakeeper 1 gyrostabilizer to a hardtop to a sunshade. I’d opt for the “swim patio” built into the port gunwale. It lowers to the water on gas struts to create a mini swim platform, moving the swimming access completely away from the propellers. Boston Whaler builds in an automatic engine cutoff sensor, so the outboard(s) cannot start when it’s deployed.

Engine

The boat can be powered with a single Mercury 350 or 400 Verado, or with twin 250s or 300s. We tested the boat in New York Harbor with twin 300s and topped 50 mph in tough conditions spurred by heavy ferry traffic. Mercury’s own test data shows the 280 Dauntless can hit close to 60 mph with the twin 300s.

Improved charging means less downtime between activities. Capt. Vincent Daniello

Back in 2015, I’d mused on these pages that my son, Evan, then in kindergarten, would likely own an electric-propelled boat. Now he’s in middle school and can operate a boat on his own. Has electric propulsion matured to where my light-hearted prediction might actually come true?

To find out, we repowered an iconic teenager’s first boat, a 1970 13-foot Boston Whaler Super Sport, to see how Elco’s EP-50 electric outboard and lithium batteries stack up against the boat’s 40 hp Johnson gas engine. This gave us an inside look at electric powerboats’ utility today and some clear ideas on electric boating’s future.

Performance

Electric power nearly matches gas at full throttle. Elco’s EP-50 pushes the Boston Whaler to 27.9 mph while drawing 308 amps at 104 volts DC (32 kilowatts). Our tests show that the boat’s 27 kilowatt-hours of usable battery power lasts for 51 minutes and covers 23.6 miles at that speed. Full throttle on the Johnson gas outboard averages 30.1 mph for 46 minutes, and it travels 23.9 miles from a 6-gallon tank of gasoline.

Slowing to the Whaler’s sweet spot at near-23 mph, gas edges out the batteries, but it’s close. The EP-50 runs for 81 minutes and travels 30.2 miles, while the Johnson goes for 94 minutes and travels 35.9 miles.

Project Insights

Back in 2017, we started with Elco’s 48-volt EP-30, intended to replace gas outboards in the 20 to 30 hp range. But with 296 pounds of lithium-iron-phosphate batteries providing just 12 kWh of usable battery power, the boat lacked adequate range and wouldn’t stay on plane with added people and gear. During the following few years, we trialed different Elco motors mated to ever-evolving battery technology. Each iteration proved better than the last.

In 2021, we reached our current-best 27.9 mph and 30.2-mile range. Part of that improvement came because battery-management systems and motor controllers—the brains that draw battery power and turn propellers—reached more deeply into those battery cells. We currently tap 88 percent of total battery capacity, up from just 65 percent in earlier batteries. Bigger gains also came when battery voltage increased from 108 volts when fully charged to 116 volts.

Gains by the Numbers

In 2017, each usable kilowatt-hour of battery capacity weighed 25 pounds and cost $950. By 2021, that dropped by a third to just 17 pounds and $636 per usable kilowatt-hour. Over that same period, the usable energy stored in identical-size batteries nearly doubled, from 2.53 kW in each cubic foot of battery to 4.85 kW per cubic foot.

Battery charging also improved markedly. It took more than 18 hours to recharge the 27 kWh the boat’s current batteries utilize. Now a new 7 kW charger does the same in about four hours. We can plug into a dockside 240-volt outlet with one-quarter charge, enjoy a two-hour lunch, and head back onto the lake with three-quarters charge.

Looking at fuel consumption alone ignores another important measure: fuel used per trip. Based on our gas-engine usage, our average lake outing lasts about three hours and only uses 2 gallons of gas—the most we’ve ever used is 4 gallons for 80 minutes of actual tubing during a four-hour outing.

Driving an electric Whaler
For the same range as 5 gallons of gas, the 27 kWh charged back into the Whaler’s batteries costs only $3.50. Capt. Vincent Daniello

What’s Still Needed?

Electric propulsion isn’t yet a full replacement for gas, but it’s getting there. Too much of the Whaler’s interior accommodates batteries, for instance, but new batteries this summer will tuck mostly beneath seats and occupy less usable interior space than the Johnson’s 6-gallon gas tank, oil reservoir and cranking battery. If next-generation batteries weigh 10 percent less per kilowatt-hour and offer 10 percent more kilowatt-hours per cubic foot of lithium, my son’s all-electric Whaler, the Echo, will noticeably exceed gas propulsion in any comparison, except for refueling time.

This leads to “use case”—the mission of the boat—when selecting propulsion. Our average lake outing, described above, falls well within the performance-charge envelope of electric power. Boaters running longer distances or spending more time tubing might possess a different viewpoint. Quick access to the gas dock, versus the ability to plug in during lunch, will likely also change the calculus.

What’s to Come?

Electric propulsion offers advantages over gas too. With the press of a switch, Elco’s Fishing and Docking mode allows just 350 engine rpm to push the Whaler just 1 mph—a user-settable feature—with maximum torque for maximum control. My son won’t be asking for gas money either. For the same range as 5 gallons of gas, the 27 kWh charged back into the Whaler’s batteries costs only $3.50 in my admittedly inexpensive municipality rate of 13 cents per kilowatt-hour. (The US national average of 19.3 cents per kilowatt-hour totals $5.21.) Maintenance savings—there are four moving parts in Elco’s outboard, and ethanol fuel is not an issue—should be substantial too.

Batteries alone won’t propel larger cruising or sport-fishing boats with big fuel tanks any time soon. The Whaler’s batteries weigh as much as 70 gallons of gas and take up the space of 45 gallons. On smaller craft, however, my son’s boating future shines brightly—and it is all battery-powered.

Just in time for the 50th anniversary of the original Outrage, Boston Whaler has debuted a thrilling new version of its flagship model: the 420 Outrage Anniversary Edition. The new Anniversary Edition retains everything boaters love about the original 420 Outrage — incredible ease of use, expansive seating and gathering spaces, a well-appointed cabin, purposeful amenities, great fishability and flawless performance — and builds on these aspects with the latest technology, updated styling, and an array of exciting new options.

“Building on the proud legacy of the Outrage name, the 420 Outrage Anniversary Edition combines superior comfort and capability with enhanced style and unsurpassed performance,” said Boston Whaler President Nick Stickler. “It’s a powerful next-generation offshore cruiser that represents the future of the Whaler brand. We’re eager for boaters to experience it.”

Cutting-edge propulsion is a major hallmark of the Anniversary Edition. The boat features triple 600-horsepower V12 Mercury FourStroke Verados with Joystick Piloting, delivering breathtaking performance, effortless handling and unmatched fuel efficiency. With a fuel capacity of 700 gallons, the 420 Outrage empowers boaters to travel significantly longer distances without having to stop and refuel. A Skyhook/autopilot keypad and functionality allow for effortless station keeping, while a Seakeeper Gyro Stabilization system virtually eliminates boat roll (and with it, seasickness).

The 420 is not only a powerful performer, it’s also a head-turner. A black hardtop frame package gives the boat a sleek, sophisticated appearance that pairs beautifully with the upholstery’s new contrast stitching and Sea Gray color scheme. Inside the cabin, darker colors and updated finishes including metallic accents make the space feel larger and more inviting. Teak accents on the helm deck, seating, footrests and bow cupholders lend an elegant touch. Boaters can also choose from several painted hull side colors and four under-hardtop gelcoat colors. Custom painted engines complete the color-coordinated look.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Outrage is also a hardcore offshore fishing platform with all the features and options to give anglers a competitive edge. The deluxe leaning post/bait prep center in the cockpit includes an insulated 40-gallon livewell, freshwater sink, tackle storage drawers and a solid-surface countertop, along with a refrigerator and electric grill. An additional 24-gallon livewell can be found in the aft port corner. Plus, the Anniversary Edition features a new FROSTBOX refrigeration system that keeps catches fresh (or beverages cool) on even the hottest summer days.

For more of a fishing advantage, the optional Flybridge is a must-have. It includes a full helm control box with VesselView screen and DTS throttle and shift, a three-passenger bench seat with individual flip-up bolsters, and an upper station lounge forward of the helm. Choose from radial, premium Gemlux, or competition outriggers for offshore fishing, and count on strategically placed rod holders throughout the boat to keep rods close at hand.

In addition to its fishing prowess, the 420 Outrage has always been a stellar entertaining platform, and the Anniversary Edition lives up to the legacy. Conversation flows naturally from the bolster-style helm and companion row seating, with port and starboard seats that rotate to face aft. A leaning post cushion on the forward side of the prep station also converts to form a three-person bench seat, providing a second row of seating behind the helm. An aft fold-down bench provides extra seating capacity, and folds neatly out of way when extra fish-fighting room or entertaining space is desired. Forward of the helm, a sprawling console lounge features fold-down armrests and drink holders, and lifts to reveal cavernous storage below. Wraparound seating at the front of the boat faces a teak bow table, making it a natural gathering zone. For swimming, diving, or hauling a large catch onboard, the standard portside dive door with removable stainless steel dive ladder adds convenience and versatility.

Below deck, the Anniversary Edition’s cabin offers an appealing place to get out of the sun, watch a movie on the 28″ flatscreen HDTV, or prep a meal in the well-equipped galley with microwave, refrigerator/freezer, sink and storage. Large side windows with opening port lights and shades let in plenty of natural light. When overnighting is on the agenda, the convertible double berth and convertible pull-out settee provide space for four people to sleep comfortably.

To celebrate 50 years of the Outrage series and round out the full Whaler experience, the 420 Outrage Anniversary Edition comes with several exclusive gifts for new owners, including a custom helm pad, unreleased artwork, a letter of authenticity, and a coffee table book detailing the history of the Outrage.

Boston Whaler has planned a series of events to kick off the new model. The “Homecoming Tour” will feature stops at locations all along the East Coast, beginning with an August launch event in New York City and including a special homecoming reunion in Quincy, Massachusetts, where the original 50-year-old Outrage model is still in use by the Marine Biological Laboratory. The 420′s tour will conclude in October at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

“The new 420 Outrage is a pure expression of boating capability,” said Stickler. “For boaters seeking a higher level of luxury, comfort and performance, it’s on a plane all its own.”

2021 Boston Whaler 250 Dauntless https://www.boatingmag.com/story/boats/2021-boston-whaler-250-dauntless/ Wed, 23 Jun 2021 23:05:00 +0000 https://www.boatingmag.com/?p=74805 Successfully blending fishing, watersports and cruising, this might be Whaler’s best-looking boat in its size class.

Overview

At first glance, the new 250 Dauntless from Boston Whaler seemed too pretty to fish—too comfortable, too dandy to get bloody. With all the fine dayboating features, its fishing armaments are nearly concealed like a professional gambler’s pearl-handled derringer. Never assume this Boston Whaler 250 Dauntless is unarmed.

Engine

Our test boat’s 250 hp Mercury V-8 pushed it to a top speed of 48 mph. If it wasn’t set up for speed, it was definitely propped for the hole shot, coming on plane in 2.6 seconds. We think the power will lift the boat easily on plane even with a passenger load of six, with power to spare. The boat performed so well at 250 hp, we wondered about the point of jumping to the max of 400. But, fill the livewells and coolers, and add tackle, wakeboards and beach bags, and the number 400 not only looks macho on the motor, but it also adds fun for the day-cruising ride.

If it were going to find its home in shallow bays, the 300 V-8 would be the max I’d choose for optimizing the performance, fuel economy, purchase price and insurance costs of this unsinkable boat. A 90-gallon fuel capacity and an optimal cruise speed at 3,500 rpm get a range of 222 miles with a 10 percent fuel reserve.

Interior and Accessories

Serious anglers will appreciate the ample 35-gallon livewell, with a blue-painted interior lighted for night fishing. It is hidden beneath a hatch flush in the center of the aft casting deck and flanked by stowaway seats also tucked beneath flush-mounted hatches. While many bay boats, such as the Ranger 2510, center a dual seat in the aft casting deck, Whaler’s seats, separated and set closest to the gunwales, give passengers a better view forward. But, in inclement weather, they offer less protection from spray than the centered seats.

While the aft casting deck has a deep motorwell, Whaler’s designers had some tricks to expand the casting-deck area. They concealed the boarding ladder in the extended casting-deck starboards and, you guessed it, tucked it beneath a flush-mounted hatch. The portside hatch conceals storage. The result is plenty of walkabout space for casting or managing a ski rope.

Whaler also thoughtfully engineered the rod-holder placements. One pair flanks the leaning post, and two additional pairs are set in the aft deck, one pair per side. They could be used for shotgun rods or flat lines. Even the leaning post features six rod holders in the sleek pod. Beneath them I found space for utility boxes, tools and gear.

Every Boston Whaler carries the armaments for fishing, but this completely new Dauntless camouflaged fishing power beneath gracious cruising features. The double lounge molded into the forward console is a luxury-first in a bay boat of this size. Underneath the lounge, I found more gear and rod stowage. Passage between that and the casting deck is generous.

Regulator’s XO 24 is a tough competitor to the Whaler ($141,995 base with hardtop and Yamaha 300 hp outboard), but it doesn’t boast the forward lounge where dual seats, typical of bay boats, pamper the guests. However, the XO 24 does have a large, thickly padded forward deck that accommodates riders and anglers when cushions are stowed. Its beam is an inch narrower and lacks a few inches in length overall, but its console is actually larger, giving more room for electronics and a more spacious head compartment below.

The forward casting deck of the Whaler might never see an angler. It’s covered in thick upholstery, creating a comfy sun pad, and boasts a pair of pop-up seatbacks for forward-facing seating. Instead of centering its aft seats behind the leaning post, Whaler put a fold-up seat at each gunwale, so there’s a pleasant forward view not available on most bay boats. Grab rails recessed into the gunwales provide safety for the seated. (There are grab rails for the aft jump seats too.) Storage and an insulated cooler beneath keep the crew organized and refreshed.

Tuck away the aft seats and remove all the cushions, and your step up to the foredeck is comfortable and footing is secure thanks to its nonskid surface.

At the helm, the captain gets three choices for seating. Our test boat had the deluxe leaning post with a thickly bolstered and upholstered leaning-post seat that offers ergonomic comfort whether you’re seated or standing behind the generously sized helm station and beneath the optional hardtop. It also has fold-down armrests and a drawer system for tackle and rigging. Additionally offered is the competition leaning-post seat with dual seats, a flip-up bolster, and four rod holders in the back. A reversible pilot-seat option includes a 32-gallon livewell.

With the combination of Whaler’s reputation for unsinkability and family-friendly options surrounding serious fishability, you have a boat that each family member can truly enjoy.
