Many boaters live in the age of outboards. These engines are often considered the only choice for center-console saltwater fishing boats. Yet Volvo Penta is bent on opening boaters’ eyes to the advantages of alternative marine power for saltwater fishing, namely Volvo Penta’s diesel inboards coupled with Aquamatic Duoprop sterndrives.

To prove the point, Volvo Penta invited me to spend a few days fishing with them in the waters of Nantucket Sound, south of Chatham, Massachusetts, targeting bluefish, striped bass and false albacore.

We fished aboard two center-consoles, including a Solace 415CS powered by twin Volvo Penta diesels. The second center-console was a Southport 30 FE, and that was the boat which really captured my attention and admiration.

Southport with Volvo Penta power
With the D6 engine mounted under the helm seat and connected to the sterndrive with a jackshaft, the Southport 30 FE gains a tremendous amount of unobstructed room to fish in the aft cockpit. Courtesy Southport Boats

The Southport featured a single-engine configuration. A 440 hp Volvo Penta D6 diesel was mounted amidships under the seat console and connected to an Aquamatic DPI sterndrive with a jackshaft. This completely freed up the aft cockpit to create a wide-open fishing area, with no outboards to obstruct lines. A big swim platform let us walk aft through a transom door to follow hooked fish across the stern.

The Volvo Penta D6 is a super-sophisticated turbo- and super-charged common-rail inline-six cylinder engine with twin overhead cams and 5.5 liters of displacement. If the 440 hp sounds a bit light for the 11,864-pound Southport, remember that a diesel generates far more torque than an equivalent-horsepower gas outboard, and so the diesel can swing a bigger propeller—in this case, an H5 stainless-steel Duoprop set—resulting in solid performance numbers.

Running to and from the legendary shallow bars and roiling rips of Nantucket Sound confirmed this axiom. The Volvo diesel propelled the 30 FE to 20 mph in 4.8 seconds and 30 mph in 8.1 seconds, and it achieved a top speed of 43.1 mph at 3,800 rpm. The boat was quiet and smooth underway, with none of the loud rattle or smelly exhaust traditionally associated with diesel engines.

Joystick control for Volvo Penta
Mounted in the armrest for the helm seat, the joystick for the Volvo Penta single diesel sterndrive provides one-handed control of steering, gear shifts, bow thruster and throttle. Courtesy Southport Boats

That strong acceleration came in handy when one of Nantucket’s infamous rogue waves reared up suddenly on our port beam. Volvo’s Jens Bering was at the wheel, and immediately turned into the wave and hammered the electronic throttle to climb the face of the 12-foot roller. Without the diesel torque and superb control offered by the Duoprop drive, not to mention Bering’s quick response, the episode may have ended quite differently.

Speaking of control, I was impressed with the Volvo Penta joystick system for the single diesel sterndrive. The 30 FE was the first in the US to offer this system. Steering, gear control, bow thruster and throttle are controlled easily with just one hand. To engage the system, you press the Docking button on the base of the joystick control. The system can also hold the boat’s speed and heading at the push of a button.

The joystick was mounted in the armrest of the helm seat of the 30 FE, which made using it ultra-easy, intuitive and comfortable as we maneuvered to troll lures around Nantucket’s treacherous rips. The Aquamatic hydraulic transmission allows for smooth, quiet shifting and pleasantly good low-speed trolling functionality. Some diesels have a tendency to troll too fast. Not so with this system.

I marveled over the optimal fuel efficiency: 2.5 mpg at 2,800 rpm and 27.9 mph, resulting in a cruising range of 359 miles based on 90 percent of its smaller 160-gallon diesel fuel tank. For comparison’s sake, an earlier test of a twin 300 hp Mercury outboard version of this boat achieved optimal efficiency of 1.6 mpg at 3,500 rpm and 26.7 mph, resulting in a cruising range of 334 miles based on 90 percent of its larger 232-gallon gasoline fuel tank.

The biggest issue that saltwater boaters have with sterndrives is the inability to tilt the drive out of the water, as it done with outboards, while docked between trips. To prevent sterndrive corrosion in areas such as New England, Volvo Penta’s Arjen Steegstra points out a special paint process and Active Corrosion Protection system engineered for Aquamatic sterndrives.

“The ACP system has been used on our IPS boats for more than 12 years,” Steegstra says. “It protects the drive from galvanic corrosion without sacrificial anodes, and offers a lot of peace of mind for our customers who boat in both brackish and salt water.” Of course, those who use a high-and-dry service, or own a boat lift, needn’t concern themselves.

In an age when filling up a boat can max out a credit card, it’s nice to know that the Volvo Penta D6 diesel DPI power system can save you money at the fuel dock, as well as open up the aft cockpit for better fishing access, and do it all without sacrificing performance or easy handling.

Boat Test: 2023 MasterCraft XStar https://www.boatingmag.com/boats/2023-mastercraft-xstar-boat-test/ Mon, 15 May 2023 13:01:00 +0000 https://www.boatingmag.com/?p=84225 A surf and waterports boat at the top of its class.

The post Boat Test: 2023 MasterCraft XStar appeared first on Boating Mag.

MasterCraft XStar wakesurfing
The XStar pumps out wakes and waves that can go from beginner levels to full pro-rider status quickly and easily. Garrett Cortese

The XStar name is one of the most iconic in towed watersports. Since its inception in the late ’90s, when MasterCraft took the acclaimed ProStar 205 model and geared it toward wakeboarding, the XStar has gone on to earn countless awards, tow the most prestigious events, and help propel watersports to unbelievable heights. For 2023, MasterCraft is taking the XStar to a new level with a series of upgrades that ensure it’s still a trendsetter, including an optional engine that has to be driven to be believed.

Starting with that all-new motor, MasterCraft and longtime marine engine partner Ilmor have worked to create the most powerful tow-boat engine on the market. The supercharged 6.2L monster packs a whopping 630 ponies and 665 pound-feet of torque. Needless to say, no load is too much for this motor to get the XStar up and on plane, be it wakeboarding or wakesurfing. With the ballast drained, the 5,800-pound XStar planes in just over 3 seconds and hits a top speed of 42 mph while burning 35 gph. Obviously, the XStar is not built to run all-out, but buyers will be happy to know the Ilmor V-8 burns an economical 7.5 gph at 2,500 rpm, which is 13 mph.

MasterCraft XStar helm

When it comes to the on-water fun, the XStar lives up to its pedigree. With 4,100 pounds of ballast and MasterCraft’s updated SurfStar system, the XStar pumps out wakes and waves that can go from beginner levels to full pro-rider status quickly and easily. Opt for MasterCraft’s FastFill system and that ballast can fill and drain in minutes. SurfStar features easy-to-use presets for wakesurfing and wakeboarding, so most riders won’t need to worry about adjusting anything; simply pick your setting and ride. For those who like to play around with the wave shape and style, SurfStar features a digital diagram on the helm display showing how the wakes and waves will change when settings are adjusted. For a mellow wave, start at 1; as you slide up the scale, the wave will become steeper and taller while adding more push. The three transom-mounted tabs that create SurfStar can be individually tweaked for further customization, and all settings can be saved as a custom profile.

Crewmembers are treated to one of the most comfortable rides on the market. Fit-and-finish has been a calling card for MasterCraft, and the XStar seating is a perfect example. The upholstery is soft and comfortable, and the triple-density foam used throughout the boat only adds to it, not to mention the ergonomic design of the seats. Seating is also multipurpose, thanks to a convertible rear bench that easily flips into the cabin to become rear-facing and a pop-up backrest on the starboard side. The sun pads on top of the engine compartment also convert into lounge-style seatbacks, great for when you take a break from riding. For added comfort, buyers can opt for the extended forward, aft and side shade fabric pieces.

MasterCraft XStar aft step
Optional flip-down swim step makes boarding from the water easier. Courtesy MasterCraft

At the helm, the captain is treated to an all-new power chair that is both comfortable and supportive.

A display at the top of the dash shows all the XStar’s vitals, while the touchscreen on the right makes controlling functions a breeze. Menus are set up for different activities: wakeboard, wakesurf, ski and chill. Simply pick what you want to do and let the XStar set things up. For audio entertainment, high-end Klipsch components are throughout, while SeaDek flooring keeps things comfortable and looking high-end.

Storage is ample throughout the XStar, including compartments underneath the unique gull-wing-style bow seats. Boards can be stashed in a variety of places, not just on the standard clamping board racks. Opt for the Z10 tower, which quickly raises or lowers with the push of a button. Integrating telematics via the MasterCraft Connect app is new and standard with all new MasterCraft models. It gives owners an easy way to check their boat’s systems and location, as well as search for nearby fuel and restaurants while out on the water.

If you’re looking to shop other boats, check out the Nautique G23. Its starting prices are in the same ballpark, but the XStar offers greater ballast capacity as standard equipment.

The XStar wasn’t just one of the first wakeboarding-specific boats created in the ’90s; it was the boat that changed the marketplace by introducing the pickle-fork bow design. Fast-forward a couple of decades, and the pickle fork is still a signature, although not nearly as pronounced and aggressive as the early iterations. The XStar looks great on the water, thanks to clean lines and hullsides, and MasterCraft’s signature sheerline. The attention to detail is hard to miss, as is the high-end performance and long-running pedigree. This boat is a must-see for any potential watersports boat buyer.

Overview

Not just a 25 LSV with an extra foot added, the new 26 LSV offers higher gunwales for deeper seating of up to 18 and a more comfortable ride. New hullside geometry offers buyers a plethora of custom gelcoat options.

Like the hullsides, the high-end interior, including Soft Grip vinyl colors, offers nearly endless color customization.

Interior and Accessories

Wraparound seating provides several cool, unique 26 LSV features. First, a portside storage locker houses a custom cooler (and whatever other items you want to put in it) and acts as a rear-facing backrest. Slide the convertible aft bench forward, pop up the backrest, and crew have a continuous bench to watch all the fun behind the boat. The convertible bench itself is also new, dubbed the Max-Pivot Seat by Malibu. This quickly and easily converts into an aft-facing seat, but it can also become an elevated table or position into a lay-flat bed, converting the wraparound seating into a sun pad. Other amenities include wireless phone chargers throughout and transom seats with adjustable backrests.

Malibu’s integrated Surf Gate and Power Wedge III systems reside at the heart of the 26 LSV’s performance. Surf Gate tabs pivot off both transom sides, helping redirect the water flow to create epic wakesurf waves. The Power Wedge III is a hydrofoil-like device that drops below the running surface. It pulls the rear of the boat deeper, thereby creating cleaner, more potent wakes and waves. Riders choose from six positions, creating rampier or mellower options. With 6,100 pounds of onboard ballast (including the Power Wedge III), wakes are world-class and customizable for beginners to the ultra-advanced.

The helm boasts easy-to-use Command Center displays. Front and center, the main touchscreen allows a quick and easy setup for wakesurfing, wakeboarding, cruising and more. New diagrams depict the positions offered by the Surf Gate and Power Wedge III, and how to change the wake or wave shape. To the left is a vertically oriented touchscreen for controlling music, lighting, the blower and the bilge pump. To the right is Malibu’s patented command dial and touchpad buttons for quickly adjusting Surf Left and Surf Right settings, the Power Wedge III position, audio volume, cruise-control speed and more.

Overview

For 2023, Centurion’s high-performing Fi23 boasts a complete redesign, including a new look, updated running surface, fresh interior styling and more.

Centurion Fi23 running
QuickLaunch utilizes QuickSurf plates to get on plane with minimal bow rise. Garrett Cortese

The 6,900-pound Fi23 can load up with 5,250 pounds of ballast, displacing serious amounts of water. Its patented Ramfill system adds that weight in less than two minutes. Turn that displaced water into clean, rideable wakes and waves using Centurion’s QuickSurf Pro system (two stern-mounted plates that work with the running surface). The waves offer tons of push and a large sweet spot, and each QuickSurf Pro plate can be micro-adjusted, allowing riders to customize wave characteristics. Combined with the center-mounted Silent Stinger Wake Plate, which makes the wave longer and mellower or steeper and shorter, QuickSurf allows the Fi23 to cater to beginner riders and top-level pros.

Interior and Accessories

Control these systems and settings using steering-wheel paddles and Centurion’s Pano Side-by-Side 12-inch touchscreens. With just a couple of finger taps, you can set up the Fi23 for riding in minutes. A favorite feature of ours is Centurion’s inclusion of fuel flow and estimated range at the helm. As wakeboats grow larger and find use on bigger bodies of water, having access to this data is vital for a captain.

The Fi23’s higher gunwales offer a deeper, drier ride. Centurion’s Opti-V hull, with 30 degrees of deadrise at the bow, rides smooth and makes clean, symmetrical wakes and waves. There’s seating for 14 and storage throughout, and the ultra-wide bow is great for facing forward or aft. Customizable seating with a sliding rear bench makes it easy to watch the action. At the transom, new pop-up seatbacks create comfortable lounging for a midday break.

The optional Roswell DropZone power tower quickly lowers and raises with the push of a button, which is great for clearing low bridges or storing in a garage. It also adds a bold look to complement the lines of the Fi23. When combined with the integrated board racks and Bimini top, the tower adds storage, convenience and comfort.

The Fi23 is well worth considering if you are shopping for an ultra-competitive 23-foot watersports boat.

Overview

Supra’s SE has always ranked as a standout, and for 2023, it sports many enhancements.

Interior and Accessories

Longer lines and higher freeboard give the SE a commanding look and complement the FxONE power tower. On board, the higher freeboard provides deeper seating and a more comfortable ride. In the bow, I discovered the coolest new feature: the Switchback Seat. The wind dam for the walk-through flips into a backrest, allowing for a third seat with the center cushion in place. Comfort continues with customizable seating, including a convertible rear bench that also sets up as a table. JL Audio speakers throughout (and on the tower) are tuned specifically to the SE’s layout. Rated for 18 and with abundant storage throughout and on the tower, the SE carries a big crew and all their gear.

Wake settings can be changed via the Vision Control Center, a multitouch screen array on the dash. Courtesy Supra Boats

Watersports performance? With 4,700 pounds of subfloor ballast and Supra’s Swell Surf System plates, the SE creates sizable and customizable wakes and waves. Wakes feature smooth transitions and long faces, with a nice kick at the top. The wakesurf waves offer plenty of power for riders of all sizes, with a pocket that makes it easy to stay in the wave while working on new tricks. Adjusting the center-mounted Supra Smart Plates makes the wave longer and mellower or shorter and steeper. And Supra’s patented AutoWake technology takes the guesswork out of setting up and maintaining wakes and waves. It uses sensors to detect pitch, roll, and other changes in the boat’s attitude. Then it automatically adjusts the ballast and wake plates to optimize the ride based on the rider’s preferences.

Supra SE running

Supra’s two large touchscreens provide redundancy and convenience. Every feature, from the ballast, AutoWake and wakesurfing setup to lighting and heated seats, can be enabled with several taps of your fingers. Soft-touch buttons built into the steering wheel allow adjusting the audio, surf side, boatspeed and more. I like the stern thruster integrated into the throttle. Twist the knob and dual thrusters move the transom. The powered captain’s chair is comfortable, supportive and heated.

There are more features to describe than I have space for here. Go see for yourself. I think you’ll agree that Supra’s SE ranks high in the ever-competitive 24-foot wakeboat market.

High Points

  • Third touchscreen next to the glove box allows crew seated beside the captain to control the audio and lighting systems.
  • Knob on the throttle makes for intuitive maneuverability when operating the twin stern thrusters on the transom.
  • Transom locker offers extra storage for wakesurf boards or any other gear you need to bring along.
  • Port and starboard wakesurf tow points located on the tower make it easy to get new surfers up and going.

Low Points

  • Flip-up backrests on the transom seats can pinch fingers if pulled on incorrectly.

Overview

Heyday’s H20 proves that you need neither a giant boat nor a fat wallet to have watersports fun.

Start with the H20’s unique transom seats, rated for use while underway. Located on both sides of the engine, these two seats add a new level of fun, allowing you to sit close and cheer on friends and family.

Interior and Accessories

Additional rear-facing seating is available with the convertible, sliding bench in the cockpit. This converts into a tabletop, complete with cup holders.

With room for 14, the H20 is a spacious 20-footer. Storage is on both the port and starboard sides, with one large area behind the observer seat, which is uniquely equipped with a push-button, gas-assisted hinge. Boards stow on swiveling racks on the tower. The tower itself is gas-assisted, which makes lowering or raising it easy.

Heyday H20 bow seating

With its high gunwales, the H20 feels safe and comfortable. The bow offers space for two adults facing forward or aft. A removable cushion converts the area into a playpen lounge.

All upholstery features the signature H series stitching. At the helm, all of the boat’s systems can be controlled and monitored from the Simrad touchscreen, which utilizes custom Heyday software. Other conveniences include a cubby area for smaller essential items and a wireless phone  charger.

Heyday H20 helm

Of course, the H20 offers watersports performance. There’s no integrated surf system; however, with 2,800 pounds of ballast in four zones plus three riders on board, the H20 kicked up impressive wakesurf waves and wakeboard wakes. The wave was sizable and had plenty of push, making it great for beginners and more-advanced riders. The wake is symmetrical with a solid lip at the top, and pros riding the H20 have landed double flips and other top-end maneuvers. The shape of the wakes and waves can be adjusted on the fly to suit different riders using the center-mounted transom tab.

Heyday’s H20 is a smaller boat with big advantages for buyers looking to own a watersports boat and not break the bank.

  • Entire spotter’s seat lifts on a gas-assisted arm, revealing access to the large portside storage area.
  • Optional power platform raises vertically, reducing length and making garage storage even easier.
  • Available with a Coastal Edition engine for enhanced corrosion resistance.

Low Points

  • Lack of an optional integrated surf system may be a deterrent for some boat buyers.

Overview

The smaller sibling of Supreme’s S240, the all-new S220 is an all-around wake-making machine designed to provide more bang for less bucks, and it delivers on several fronts, and in a size that can be more approachable for a lot of buyers.

Supreme S220 wakesurfing
The S220 can create a mellow, beginner-friendly wave, or a steeper one suited to advanced riders. Garrett Cortese

While the “S” moniker has been in the Supreme lineup for years, the latest iteration is anything but similar to its predecessors. The S220, along with its bigger 24-foot sister, features higher freeboard, a hybrid bow shape, and a clean hullside and sheerline that give it a solid, defined look on the water. Simply put, the S220 looks like it can create some serious wakes and waves, and thanks to its all-new running surface, it does.

Supreme S220 bow seating
The wide bow offers plenty of space for two adults and extra storage. Garrett Cortese

Wakes and Waves

The EZ-V hull is similar to the Opti-V hull from sister company Centurion, which features 30 degrees of deadrise at the stem and 20 degrees at the transom. This gives the S220 a solid and smooth ride in choppy waters and helps the transom displace more water, in turn helping to create sizable and symmetrical wakes and waves. Combine the EZ-V hull with up to 4,400 pounds of internal ballast capacity and room for 12 on board, and the S220 is capable of producing wakes and waves for beginners to advanced riders and all those in between.

Of course, displacing water is only part of the equation when it comes to turning the wake into a wakeboarder or wakesurfer’s playground. To help shape the wave and give it a clean riding surface, Supreme employs the QuickSurf Pro system—automated tabs on the port and starboard sides of the transom—and the Stinger Wake Plate, an automated tab at the center. The QuickSurf Pro plates deploy in the water to elevate one side of the S220 and displace the other, thereby creating a clean, surfable wave. The Stinger Wake Plate can trim up or down to adjust the wave’s height and length. With a smaller load on board, the wakeboard wakes still provide plenty of punch for beginner and intermediate riders. Fill up the ballast and bring some friends along, and more-advanced riders will have no problem catching big air. Surfers of all shapes and sizes are treated to a wave that has plenty of push and only gets stronger with more displacement from the boat. With a couple of setting adjustments—mainly through the Stinger Wake Plate—the S220 can go from a mellow, beginner-friendly wave to a steeper one more suited for advanced riders working on a variety of tricks.

Supreme S220 helm
Supreme’s OmniTouch 7-inch touchscreen is front and center at the helm. Garrett Cortese

Interior and Accessories

On board the S220, the 12 crewmembers are provided plenty of comfort with the Spradling vinyl interior that, thanks to its 17-mil topcoat, is also made to take a beating. With the higher freeboard, the seating is deep and comfortable. Storage is abundant underneath all the seating areas, along with wakesurf board holders in the extended Bimini top and board racks on the tower. Speaking of the tower, our test model was equipped with Roswell’s Battle Ax, which complemented the lines of the boat very well. It also features accent panels that can be customized with colors to match the boat, allowing customers to add their own personal touch when buying a new boat.

At the helm, the captain has access to a simple, easy-to-use layout. While multiple touchscreens can be cool, they can also get confusing, especially for new boaters worrying about towing riders and getting wakes and waves dialed in. Supreme’s 7-inch touchscreen is front and center, with easy-to-access menus for adjusting all the S220’s onboard systems. Analog toggle switches make it even easier to control necessities, like the blower, bilge and lighting. The PCM 409 engine provided plenty of torque for getting on plane and burned a stingy 5.2 gph at wakesurf speeds.

The S220 transom is nicely equipped with a large sun-pad area over the engine and rear storage compartments, which is great for lounging at the sandbar. Two small lockers are easily accessible from the swim step and can be utilized for storing wet gear, like ropes and handles, or as coolers if you add ice. Built-in drains prevent the lockers from filling with water.

Supreme S220 sunpad
Aft seating is plentiful and luxurious. Garrett Cortese

When comparing the S220 against others in the market, you could check out the all-new Axis T220, which has room for 15 on board and is equipped with parent company Malibu’s Surf Gate and Power Wedge systems.

Overall, the S220 is a solid, all-around watersports boat ideally suited for those looking to break into the wakeboat market. With plenty of room for family and friends, a sizable 70-gallon fuel capacity to ensure the on-water fun lasts all day, and a size that’s easier to tow, store and maneuver around docks, the S220 checks a lot of boxes. If you’re in the market, be sure to take a close look.

  • Engine: GM Marine L96 6.0L 409 hp
  • Drive/Prop: Inboard/Acme 16″ x 13″
  • Gear Ratio: 1.72:1 Fuel Load: 25 gal. Crew Weight: 540 lb.

High Points

  • QuickSurf Pro can be customized multiple ways to dial in waves for all riding styles and preferences.
  • Outside the Box (OTB) vinyl pattern adds a unique look while providing resistance to overheating.
  • Transom storage compartments are great for wet items or can be used as coolers when you’re beached.

Low Points

The SVX 230 IO serves up an agile, stable and responsive ride. Bill Doster

Overview

Boatbuilders have long attempted to blend the size and space of a deck boat with the look and style of an open-bow runabout, but results are often mixed. Starcraft’s SVX 230 IO pulls off the challenge with aplomb. Hullsides carry the beam width nearly all the way forward, keeping the bow cockpit wide and roomy without resorting to polarizing pickle forks or spoonlike swoops. Instead, a pair of gentle angles bring the otherwise rectangular footprint to a shallow, attractive V. Top things off with a wingless windshield, like those found aboard premier wakeboat models, and the result is a stylish, family-friendly hybrid for Starcraft’s typical value-minded price tag.

Starcraft SVX 230 IO bow seating

Interior and Accessories

Step into the cockpit via the starboard-side transom walk-through or spacious bow platform and find a seating layout for up to 11 crew. Bow couches stretch 3 feet, 6 inches in length and 1 foot, 6 inches in width. In the main cockpit, the high-back captain’s chair is duplicated behind the port console, both featuring flip-up bolsters. Aft, a U-shaped lounge wraps the remainder of the perimeter, interrupted only briefly by that corner walk-through. Swivel the portside seat when spotting for watersports or to socialize; the captain’s chair can turn likewise when not underway. A sun pad tops the engine compartment. Lay it flat or ratchet up the forward cushion to enjoy five stages of incline.

Details make the difference in value-minded models. MarineMat is standard atop the bow and swim platforms. Both feature telescoping four-step ladders under hinged covers for easy boarding. A beefy stainless-steel rail runs the length of the bow cockpit.

The dash is stylish and contoured, with an analog gauge array centered in the driver’s view. Stow phones and other items below within a shallow shelf.

Engine

Underway, Starcraft’s dihedral-V hull offered a solid ride, combining a deep-V along the centerline with reverse chines for a mix of both agility and stability. Our test boat’s 250 hp MerCruiser 4.5L pushed the boat onto plane in 3.8 seconds, past 30 mph in 7.4, and peaked at an average of 48.4 mph.

How We Tested

  • Engine: Mercury MerCruiser 4.5L
  • Drive/Prop: Mercury Alpha/Spitfire 14 1/4″ x 19″ 4-blade aluminum
  • Gear Ratio: 1.62:1 Fuel Load: 40 gal. Crew Weight: 160 lb.

High Points

  • Tailor the boat for fishing or skiing, with options like fishing seats, a livewell, wake tower and removable ski pylon.
  • Extra storage located under the consoles.
  • Standards include a ski pylon, stainless-steel bow rails, an in-floor storage locker, JL Audio Bluetooth sound system, Bimini top and tilt steering.

Low Points

  • Fit-and-finish concerns include exposed and unsupported speaker wires in the engine compartment, and unprotected hoses through the storage divider.
  • You might miss elbow support for your throttle arm, particularly during activities like tow sports that require frequent speed adjustments.
  • Automotive-style battery connectors don’t meet current ABYC standards.

Toughest Competitor

Glastron’s 22-foot-4-inch GTD 225 (starting at $60,867 with MerCruiser 4.5L 250 Alpha) features a similar profile, layout, deep and secure feel, and even windshield design (albeit with side panels). The extended swim platform with EVA matting is an upgrade, but a pop-up changing room below the starboard bow seat is standard. There’s also a topside sink and open cooler storage in the port console and an available fishing package. Passenger capacity is 13.
