Volvo Penta’s FWD drive system revolutionized the ability of recreational boats to double as surf boats thanks to its forward facing propeller design. Now, with the Twin FWD system this technology is available for boats up to 38 feet. We had a chance to run and see this system up close on a Cobalt R33 Surf.
Yamaha has several of its outboards on display at the show, led by its largest engine, the XTO 450 (read about it here). The XTO 450 is designed for big-boat applications to get you safely to the canyons and back.

Stingray is building some beautiful saltwater touring and fishing boats. Their 259 DC is the latest entry and boasts the enclosed cockpit for which DC’s are so popular and all the seating that makes them an excellent choice for touring. Add to their their many fishing amenities and you have a boat that fishes and cruises hard, but hits the wallet softly. And, in addition, the 2590 is built on Stingray’s popular and wildly successful Z-Plane hull. Convention Center Booth MB739
We saw this flats skiff for the first time in New Smyrna Beach last fall and fell in love with it. A spacious cockpit, expansive casting platforms flush to the gunwales and an aggressive hull for snappy, smooth rides and a 12-inch draft are the top line selling points. But, true to White River Marine Group’s heritage, Mako has completely outfitted this boat for you and brought it to the water at production boat price when we thought the boat stood toe to toe with premium, custom, high priced flats boats. About $62 thousand with a Merc Pro XS 150, aluminum trailer, power pole and MinnKota trolling motor with spot lock and autopilot. If you’re looking at skinny water, we think you should be looking at this. Convention Center Booth MB1098
Ranger’s reputation in saltwater is as legendary as its reputation among bass fisherment. The 2660 Bay was introduced two years ago and Ranger has continued to refine it. The hull offers a crisp comfortable ride, offshore capability and the nimble handling required in smaller bays and estuaries. It bristles with rod holders, boasts up to three livewells and has convenient storage on deck for tackle and tools. Convention Center Booth 886
This all new 30-foot center console is one of Robalo’s best yet. It’s smooth running hull is stable at rest and easy on the crew at speed in seas. It’s fit and finish includes a gleaming gel coat, polished, durable hardware and silicone vinyl that won’t mildew or stain. Fishing features include dual livewells on the transom and foldaway seating with a foredeck arrangement that converts from luxury riding to hardcore fishing when the cushions are stowed in the spacious storage compartments. Also check out their new 257 dual console with equally satisfying fit and finish. Convention Center Booth MB2284
At last! Blackfin has brought a hybrid bay boat to market with all the serious fishability for which the brand is known, plus all the luxury accommodations owners demand. The 26’3” hull has a 9’2” beam and is a double step design for optimum performance and fun. The lines are exciting and its all set up for up to 500 horsepower. Convention Center Booth MB1572
Volvo Penta revolutionized wake surf boats with their forward drive gear case that puts duoprops forward under the transom and ports the exhaust below the water, safely away from riders and passengers. Chaparral capitalized on this new propulsion system with their 2870 SSX. It makes a long, powerful wake that pro riders enjoy and it offers amazing comfort inside. Add to that the full maneuverability of the forward drive and you have advantages fixed prop wake boats can’t provide. Convention Center Booth 884
Grady White is a record holder in customer satisfaction awards and their consistent quality and style ensure only top shelf dealers carry their boats. That’s a double win for the boater because among competitors a good boat from the worst dealer is often the worst boat. Grady’s new dual console is a winner for multi-sport day boat. A side boarding door, luxury seating throughout with a small cabin below helm console and a head beneath the passenger console give all-day accommodations and comfort to the team. Convention Center Booth 1984
Boating Magazine’s 2024 Small Dayboat Category Winner, the Monterey Elite 30 is an American-made dayboat that takes on the European builders, who have arguably owned this category for a number of years, with a wider beam, more horse- power and innovations such as its ingeniously executed centerline helm with all-glass display. Featuring a straight stem, but with more flare worked into the bow than similar boats, we found the ride and handling great. Convention Center Booth MB330
Boating Magazine’s 2024 Large Dayboat Category Winner is powered by the new Volvo Penta Twin Forward Drives and rates as the world’s largest wakesurf boat. Beyond that accolade, Regal built in tremendous versatility, delivering a boat that can entertain, overnight and even fish, all while providing surfing thrills safely. That the boat is finished beautifully, and loaded with thoughtful details, further solidifies its stature and status. Convention Center Booth MB582
Boating Magazine’s 2024 Performance Boat Category Winner, the Checkmate Pulsare 2400 BRX, is a new entrant in a shrinking category and gives boaters seeking such a boat an alternative to used boats—with the versatility of a bowrider. Running on V-bottom with a pad, and with a Mercury Racing motor set back on a jackplate, this boat really goes. It can be powered as a 65-mph run- about or, with the Mercury Racing 500R, for 90-plus- mph thrills. Inside, plush upholstery, a new digital dash, and other upgrades ensure user-friendly speed and comfort. Miami Beach Convention Center/ Pride Park Booth 10
Boating Magazine’s 2024 Category Winner Fishing Boat
The 232 Center Console’s ride and standard equipment are equivalent to boats costing more. It is a true “great buy.” A nice detail is the front-entry head, and there are enough seats and drink holders to allow this fishboat to serve as a runabout and retain great fishability. Convention Center MB 1284
With its proprietary stepped hull design, top-quality appointments and a commitment to fishing, family and luxury, this boat is a must-see. On display in the Miami Beach Convention Center booth MB 812.

Whether it is redfish or drum, catfish or stripers, the Bay Rider 269 Bay is designed for the serious angler. This new boat is the “ultimate fishing platform” because it has front and rear live wells, insulated fish boxes and storage boxes, a large foredeck for casting, and plenty of rod storage. See it at Yamaha slip (#417) at Venetian Marina.
Our Tech Team ran this boat and the review comes out next month. Take this opportunity to see this new boat line at MIBS. The Navan S30 features the patented T-Step Hull, a stepped design. It’s also loaded with tech, from auto trim and joystick to the optional battery pack that replaces a genset. See it in the Convention Center at MB 1744.
The Nimbus W9 is a weekender—its sistership, the T9, a dayboat—recently graced the cover of Boating. See all the style and functionality the Nimbus W9 offers boaters seeking a boat that performs well with a single-outboard and offers lots of versatility. See it in the Convention Center at MB 2654.
The Sundancer 320 Outboard continues the Sundancer story, blending a cruiser and a sport boat/bow rider in one package. Thanks to a reexamination of deck architecture, the bow is more usable than ever before; meanwhile, the cockpit affords versatile enjoyment of the water, and the cabin provides a comfortable place to get out of the sun or tuck in for the night. Come celebrate the Sundancer’s 50th Anniversary in the Convention Center booth MB 354.

The Boston Whaler 330 Vantage is a dual console design sporting many innovations. Check out that full-height windshield. Powered by Mercury outboards, it is built with Whaler’s proprietary process and so is an unsinkable boat. See it at MB2454 in the Convention Center.
We are excited to get aboard this new Stingray 172 DC at Miami. The dual console format makes so much sense for so many boaters. Plus, this one is sized to easily trailer and even fit in many garages. See it at the Convention Center MB739.
The Sea Pro 225 FLX Sandbar is a boat tailored to the desires of those boaters who like to head to the cove, the raft-up or, yes, the sandbar. It boasts unique features, such as a table that deploys off the transom for people wading near the boat. And, its head is the largest we’ve seen aboard this size boat. Our test of this boat hits next month. You can see the boat at MIBS, in the Convention Center at MB 1286.

The judges’ committee included Ben Stein (Chair), Tim Murphy (Co-Chair), Kelsey Bonham, Kevin Falvey, Alan Jones, Adam Quandt, Gary Reich, and Tony Esposito.
The 2024 Miami Innovation Award winners are:
Boston Whaler, 365 Conquest – “The unsinkable Boston Whaler 365 Conquest proved unbeatable in its category. Drawer style seats, point of use storage and moving the galley topside makes for an offshore boat of great versatility,” said Kevin Falvey.
HCB Yachts, HCB 48′ Campeón – “The HCB 48 Campeón takes the idea of the custom boat to a new level with an ultra-widescreen display that can be customized to the owner’s desires and a one-touch digital switching system that powers up only the systems specified by the skipper,” Gary Reich noted. “The build quality and attention to detail overshadowed entrants in the category.”
Skyhawk Oversea, Skyhawk Oversea –“This is an easy, affordable boat monitoring system that requires no hardwiring or technical knowledge,” said Tony Esposito.
Boston Whaler, 210 Vantage – “This dual console, 21-footer with its convertible port side lounge brings many of the features of much bigger boats to this 21-foot boat,” said Tim Murphy.
Shadow-Caster LED Lighting, Eagle Ray Light Bar – “From a hyper-focused long-distance spot to a diffused flood light, the Eagle Ray Light Bar offers flexibility and low energy usage in one simple installation,” noted Murphy.
Honorable mention: MasterCraft Boat Company, Power Board Racks
Nautical Ventures, ePropulsion eLite – “There are other electric outboards on the market, but the ePropulsion eLite beats them all in simplicity, weight and price point,” said Kelsey Bonham. “This is perfect for a thrifty cruiser, a savvy kayaker and many in between.”
Taco Marine, Open Water Internal & Collapsible Carbon Fiber Outrigger Poles – “Taco’s carbon fiber outrigger poles are lightweight collapsible, easy to ship and can be setup without tools. Go fish!” exclaimed Alan Jones. In stock at Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s
SeaDek, Backlighted SeaDek – “SeaDek’s embedded RGB lighting takes the ubiquitous EVA foam decking, coaming pads, and step pads to a new level of functionality and owner customizations,” said Falvey.
Pleasurecraft Engine Group, PCM ZZ8S and ZZ8R Engines – “The highest performing marine engines have historically demanded the highest-octane fuel. PCM blows that paradigm out of the water with the ZZ8 engine series which makes gobs of torque and a herd of horsepower on 89 octane fuel,” noted Falvey.
Mercury Racing (Mercury Marine), V8 500R – “Mercury Racing didn’t just add 50 horsepower to create the 500r, they also made it stronger, increased fuel and airflow, gave it the ability to compensate for humidity and yet it still runs on 89 octane,” said Jones.
SeaSucker LLC, Basking Bag – Esposito noted, “It solves a real-world boating problem. Who among us hasn’t had to turn about to retrieve an overboard trash bag?”

Sea-Doo, RXP-X – “The Sea-Doo RXP-X 325 takes an already strong power platform in the PWC market to a completely new level,” said Adam Quandt. “Featuring a new Rotax power plant, all while not adding any weight or size, the RXP-X 325 is a true rocket on the water.”
Dockmate, Dockmate DPS – “Dockmate DPS brings the benefits of dynamic positioning systems to hundreds of thousands of boats that previously couldn’t leverage its safety and convenience,” said Reich.

Don’t leave Miami without trying El Carajo’s Cuban tapas style café. Make reservations and go with the custom paella, choosing just the seafood and sausage ingredients you love. They have. A lobster bisque and a Galician soup with smoked pork, ham hock, bacon, Serrano ham, white beans and potatoes. Galician octopus in a butter sauce? Oh yea! Fried cod or chorizo croquettes are gonna go down fast, too. Comfortably priced for Miami. Don’t let the gas station front put you off.

I happened upon Meraki Greek Bistro with Editor-in-Chief, Kevin Falvey, and some industry friends about six years ago. The vibe is relaxed, the food is Mediterranean and the staff is friendly and welcoming. Meraki is out of the boat show bustle. The food is authentic Greek and good, from Tzatziki to Keftedes, and from Spanokopita to Octopus. Yamas!

A great spot for lunch. Walk from the convention center. Look over your shoulder at Bella Cuba and you may be dining with high-powered execs from the Boating industry who strolled over for lunch before heading back for the afternoon rush at show. The authentic Cuban fare is served prompt and delicious. Try Grandma’ Chicken Noodle Soup or the Palomilla Steak. Great Cuban sandwiches, of course. Medium price. Just a great place.

Want to learn about the latest in marine audio control systems? Stop by JL Audio’s booth and ask about the new NMEA 2000-connected MediaMaster HTML interface for JL Marine MediaMaster marine source units. This gives boaters full control of their premium sound systems from Simrad, Lowrance or Garmin MFDs. Historically, MFDs provided limited compatibility and control for sound systems, which made having an audio-system control head necessary. This HTML interface ends the need for a dedicated audio-system controller, moving control and management to the MFD. It also reduces clutter at the helm, freeing space for installing other equipment on the dash. $499.99; jlaudio.com.

Head over to the Raymarine booth to see how Axiom MFDs can now integrate with Rhodan Marine’s bow-mount saltwater trolling motors, which range from 12 to 36 volts in shaft lengths up to 108 inches. Anglers can control Rhodan trolling motors from an Axiom 2 Pro or XL MFD just as they would from the Rhodan key fob. The integration allows anglers to increase and decrease thrust, and adjust the motor’s direction, which is clearly shown on the Axiom display. With the Hold Heading mode, boaters can maintain a heading and adjust it in 1-degree increments. The system can also maintain position over a fishing spot. Raymarine’s integration with Rhodan can -automatically detect whether the trolling motor is stowed or deployed. This innovative feature enables Axiom to steer the trolling motor when it is active, but then control a Raymarine Evolution autopilot when the Rhodan motor is stowed. Rhodan integration with Axiom requires upgrading to Raymarine’s LightHouse 4.5 operating system. To learn more about this system, visit raymarine.com or rhodanmarine.com. Up to three CommandMics can be connected to the IC-M510BB, allowing it to double as an onboard intercom system on large boats. NMEA 2000 networking capabilities provide plug-and-play data communication with other electronics, such as an MFD. The radio can also share GNSS/GPS position data, AIS, and DSC calls with other onboard equipment. The unit has a last-call voice-recording function that automatically saves up to two minutes of a recent incoming call. A built-in 15-watt amplifier increases the audio output to an external hailer/speaker, and there’s a built-in hailer function that also sounds foghorn patterns. $799.95; icomamerica.com. Shop West Marine for more models
Stop by SiriusXM Marine’s booth to learn more about the satellite-delivered Fish Mapping data service that provides detailed fishing and weather information directly on a boat’s MFD to help find fish and stay safe. While you’re there ask about the new Fish Mapping app available for no additional cost to subscribers. It provides access to the same eight dedicated fishing features available on an MFD, plus two additional app-exclusive features: 1) historical data that lets you observe how currents, temperature contours, plankton fronts and other data have moved over the past few days, and 2) ocean-current movements using arrows to show direction, with the speed reflected in the size of the arrows (the larger, the faster the currents). The data is overlaid directly on your chart so you can see information relative to the location of your boat. $109.99 per month; siriusxm.com.
