Overview

Bluewater Sportfishing Boats’ newest, the 25T, proves itself a purpose-built fishing boat ready to tackle offshore conditions like few boats its size.

An Armstrong engine bracket holds the twin Yamaha F200s and adds 3 feet of length to its 25-foot hull. It has a wave-slashing 24 degrees of deep-V goodness at the transom and an even-sharper 44 degrees at the entry. Yet, because deep deadrise can make a boat tender, all Bluewaters now come standard with Seakeeper’s Ride system. This replaces standard trim tabs with what’s called a Vessel Attitude Control System. While underway, this makes 1,000 observations and 100 corrections per second using unique cupped blades that travel only a fraction of an inch when at planing speeds. The system reduces pitch and roll by up to 70 percent while the boat’s at speed.

Hardcore anglers will love the absence of fixed bowrider seats and a molded-in stern bench, which can rob a boat of angling space. The fishing cockpit is roomy. I taped 47 inches of deck aft of the leaning post. You can add family-friendly seat options, but they are easily removable for fishing. Other features that let you know the 25T is a real-deal fishing boat include the twin 24-gallon transom livewells, twin in-floor 20-gallon fish boxes, and a 133-gallon bow fish box/storage locker that can hold tuna up to an estimated 250 pounds. Our test boat sported 21 total rod holders, including 12 set into the gunwales (eight are standard).

The helm features a pair of flush-mounted Garmin 8612xfv multifunction displays and can accommodate up to 16-inchers. Rather unusual was the optional thin windshield, made of the same polycarbonate material as the optional side panels, which, despite being curved, provided a distortion-free view.

The twin Yamaha F200 outboards proved an excellent option. Time to 30 mph was 9.1 seconds, and the best cruise speed was 25.5 mph (3,500 rpm), which yielded an impressive 2.3 mpg. Along with its jumbo 189-gallon fuel tank, it offers it a theoretical range of nearly 400 miles. Bluewater also rigs twin Suzuki and Mercury outboards up to 500 hp, with a single 300 hp option. Choices in power: just another benefit of owning the Bluewater 25T.

How We Tested

  • Engines: Twin Yamaha F200 outboards
  • Drive/Prop: Outboard/Yamaha Reliance 14 ½” x 18″ stainless steel
  • Gear Ratio: 1.86:1 Fuel Load: 80 gal. Water on Board: 0 gal. Crew Weight: 400 lb.

High Points

  • Gunwale height starts at 26 inches aft and grows to 31 inches moving forward.
  • Equipped with Gemlux friction hinges, hatches remain open until you close them, so there is little fear of smashed toes and fingers.
  • Bluewater is a custom family-owned builder, and with its wide range of options, it can design a boat that gives buyers precisely what they want.

Low Points

  • Unlike similar boats, there is no tuna door for landing extra-large fish and helping guests board.
  • When deployed, the removable stern bench and bowrider have support legs that stand on some hatches, making these lockers inaccessible.

Boat Test: 2025 Pursuit OS 325 https://www.boatingmag.com/boats/2025-pursuit-os-325-boat-test/ Thu, 13 Feb 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.boatingmag.com/?p=96146 The Pursuit OS 325 blends the versatility of an all-purpose fun boat with the capabilities of an offshore fishing machine.

Overview

Full disclosure: Boats and adult beverages are two of my favorite things, and I’ve realized that there are many similarities (besides being addictive). Some boats are beer (a good one like Heineken or Corona), while others are more like a fine Burgundy (a nice Montrachet will do).

But some, like the new Pursuit OS 325, are unquestionably Champagne: bubbly, light, and full of smiles (my first choice would be Dom Perignon, thank you).

Pursuit OS 325 cockpit rod holders
There are multiple gunwale rod holders and rocket launchers on the fiberglass hardtop. Courtesy Pursuit Boats

This is a boat that checks all the boxes for an all-purpose fun boat as much a battlewagon with a bunch of anglers aboard as it is an afternoon cruiser with family and friends. It’s the newest in Pursuit’s Offshore series (hence the OS). And offshore it is, with a 20-degree deadrise hull, full-length strakes, and wide chine flats. The deadrise slices solid Gulf Stream swells, the strakes throw the spray far aside, and the chines make it stable at trolling speeds. With twin Yamaha 350s on our test boat, we topped out at 52-plus mph with full tanks and a bunch of folks aboard.

Pursuit OS 325 cockpit seating
A pair of folding settees along with a removable table maximize entertainment space. Courtesy Pursuit Boats

Interior and Accessories

At a glance, you’ll see the multiple gunwale rod holders and rocket launchers on the fiberglass hardtop. There’s a 32-gallon transom livewell, and its class-leading storage includes the bait center with tackle trays, and lure tubes and drawers (in the cockpit console under the Kenyon grill and sink), and fish boxes in the floor—24- and 27-gallon—each with independent diaphragm pumps. You’d peg this as a fish boat. You’d be wrong.

Families are going to delight in the wraparound seating with table opposite the helm, and a pair of folding settees for Aunt Edna are in the cockpit with another removable table. The 12-inch side decks leading forward are surrounded by 24-inch welded stainless-steel rails from bow to cockpit, so the 325 is kid-safe too.

Pursuit OS 325 grill
A Kenyon grill is found in the cockpit console. Courtesy Pursuit Boats

Step through the sliding door next to the helm into the cabin and—oh my!—you weren’t expecting 6 feet, 2 inches of headroom (that deadrise really helps here). Forward is a dinette with a high/low table that converts into a full V-berth. Peek aft, and you’ll find a 6-foot-2-inch wide berth tucked under the cockpit, which is very comfy (yes, I stretched out) and perfect for a long weekend aboard.

Adding family amenity, the fully enclosed head offers plenty of headroom, plus a sink and shower. Opposite is a mini galley with a microwave and a drawer-style fridge.

Pursuit OS 325 helm
Our test boat featured two 16-inch GPSMap 8616 multifunction displays, the Yamaha engine interface, and Siren Marine systems monitoring. Courtesy Pursuit Boats

Whether you’re fishing or relaxing with family, the helm is the heart of the OS 325, and a right fine one it is. First, the skipper gets a folding bolster helm seat with infinite adjustments, and it swivels to face the dining table opposite. Like the other upholstery aboard, the Dri-Fast foam with mesh backing means (pardon me) no wet butts. The dash is user-friendly, and our test boat featured two 16-inch GPSMap 8616 multifunction displays, the Yamaha engine interface, and Siren Marine systems monitoring.

The hardtop features molded locations for the radar (mounted on powder-coated supports), riggers, and a spotlight or a FLIR camera. The optically clear one-piece windshield is impressive, in part because you can wear polarized sunglasses without getting “hotspots.” With the side windows extending well aft (augmented with standard side curtains to stretch the enclosure), this is a pilothouse that protects from sun, rain and wind. Need air? Open the electric windshield vent for hot-day cooling. Or, opt for cockpit air conditioning.

Engines

Our pair of Yamaha F350 V-6 outboards (300 hp are standard) gave us integrated digital electronic controls and steering, with optional joystick. The dash also sported a joystick for the standard 3 hp Lewmar bow thruster.

As indicated earlier, we topped out at just shy of 53 mph. At 36.4 mph, the OS 325 sipped fuel (26 gph). With the 300-gallon tank, that provided a range beyond 370 miles.

Pursuit OS 325 transom livewell
The transom is equipped with a 32-gallon livewell. Courtesy Pursuit Boats

Pursuit is renowned for tough boats with class-leading stowage. The 325 is no exception. It’s hand-laminated with blister-thwarting vinylester resins, with a rot-proof foam-filled structural grid of infused glass that adds rigidity. With the hammer down and running in chop, there wasn’t a squeak or groan. To carry 700 hp, the transom uses the patented Pursuit Transom Reinforcement Grid. In addition, the hull-to-deck joint is mechanically fastened and through-bolted at all cleats, and the through-hull fittings are bronze. All this is garnished with a five-year hull/deck warranty.

Our test boat had the Fischer Panda 5 kW generator for air conditioning to cool the cabin when away from shore power and, as a bonus, it provides reverse (hot or cold) air conditioning for the skipper and guests in the cockpit.

Pursuit OS 325 cabin
The cabin offers a dinette with a high/low table that converts into a full V-berth. Courtesy Pursuit Boats

Underway, a spin of the Brody knob on the stainless-steel wheel provided a banked turn that wouldn’t alarm Aunt Edna, even flat out.

Shopping around? Take a look at the Boston Whaler 325 Conquest (32 feet, 3 inches; Merc 300 hp Verados; $515,742).

Thinking back on my day on the OS 325 and reviewing the pictures, I realize that I was wrong. This Pursuit is truly a fine bottle of Louis Roederer Cristal Champagne. There’s just nothing we could complain about.

Overview

Given the widespread popularity of taking one’s boat to The Sandbar, or The Cove, or The Island (I’m using proper nouns because in every boating locality these places are referred to as specific locations), it’s a wonder we haven’t tested a boat with this name in the 69 years we’ve been in publication. Way to go, Sea Pro! And, not just for the name. The 225FLX Sandbar Boat is designed and outfitted with features to make it shine for boat buyers who regularly visit their local gathering spot, the beach brigade, the cove captains, the sandbar bosses.

As our test proved, this is a versatile boat. Read on to discover more about it.

Sea Pro 255 FLX Sandbar Boat helm
The helm proved roomy to spend the day aboard, during our test, and the team found the layout great. Especially liked was the waterproof dry box (“captain’s box”) shown on top and to starboard. Courtesy Sea Pro Boats

Engines

You can power the Sea Pro FLX with a variety of outboard engine brands. That is to say, a given dealer may offer it with one or more brands of power. We think boats that offer you a choice of power is a good thing.

Our test boat was powered by a single, inline-4 Suzuki 200-hp outboard. This delivered good performance for this boat. Check out what we thought.

See a video review of our test boat’s Suzuki outboard, here.

The 225FLX rides on a conventional V-hull with a moderate 17.5 degrees of deadrise. This is not a boat that is going to offer a high cruising speed on choppy water, like other boats that sport a deeper V.

Sea Pro 255 FLX Sandbar Boat overhead
This boat is versatile, fitted with seating and offering fishability as well. Courtesy Sea Pro Boats

That said, properly handled the 225FLX can readily traverse open water safely and comfortably when properly handled. In fact, our test took place on a day of questionable weather, with 20-knot winds whipping up steep, 3-foot whitecaps. In these conditions, the Sea Pro’s ability to stay on plane at 15 mph—something a similar boat with a deeper V would be challenged to achieve, by the way—allowed proceeding in dry, slam-free comfort. The optional Zip Wake auto trim tabs helped in this. It’s all about setting your expectations.

Shallower deadrise also results in higher efficiency due to easier planing. This allows the boat to achieve good performance with a 200 hp Suzuki inline-4 outboard. Our tester hit 30 mph in 10.3 seconds and topped out over 40 mph. The chart shows the fuel burn, which I deem excellent for a coastal boat this size. Larger 250 hp options are available.

Also, the scant 14 inches the 225FLX draws can be attributed to its hull form. That’s knee-deep, easy-wading, even for kids. You might consider that shallow draft one of the “sandbar features.”

Fishing features are found throughout. Courtesy Sea Pro Boats

Interior and Accessories

Wading around the boat is what Sea Pro envisioned when it developed the innovative Sandbar Table that mounts to the transom, just above the waterline. This facilitates serving snacks while beached or anchored shallow.

Other sandbar-specific features include a tremendous head compartment—the largest we’ve seen in a boat this size. There’s a sink, porthole and our tester sported the optional marine head with a pump-out. For long days beached or at anchor, your crew will need relief and this head provides it comfortably.

Let’s review the seating. Forward, the V-shaped seats combine with the seat on the console front to allow a group to gather around the optional table. Optional backrests convert the seats to lounges. Pull the cushions (these fit inside the head—we checked) and use the optional table as a filler to create a casting platform. The seats conceal draining storage.

Aft, folding jump seats create a three-to-four-person-wide lounge out of the aft platform. Big storage is inside. Want to face aft? The leaning post backrest flip flops to do just that. Additionally, an optional cooler slides out from beneath the leaning post to form either a footrest or another seat, or for easy access to the cooler itself.

Flip that backrest the other way and take your spot at the helm. There is comfort seated or standing thanks to the footrest and there was enough room at the helm, further enhanced by the tilt helm power steering. There’s also space for a variety of electronics, including big-screen MFDs, to add to the standard Simrad 9-incher. An Audison Marine Audio stereo is also standard, along with a compass, and the Sea Pro Connect app. I appreciated the dry box atop the console: Every boat needs a “Captain’s Box” at the helm for wallets, licenses, glasses and more. Overhead, the T-top provided good sun coverage and impressed me in several ways. Made in-house by Sea Pro, the top features powder-coated pipework, an underside that matches the hull color, and a grab handle incorporated into its perimeter that I found perfectly placed for boarding the boat from a high dock.

Sea Pro 255FLX Sandbar Boat table
This unique “Sandbar Table” easily stows and deploys and enhances entertaining at the sandbar, cove or raft-up. Courtesy Sea Pro Boats

Fishing standards include trolling-motor wiring, raw-water washdown, under-gunwale rod racks, four gunwale rod holders, a 68-quart stern cooler-box, two 120-quart boxes under the bow seats and a 12-gallon livewell.

The price is definitely a feature. Offered for $81,932 as a nicely equipped version with hull color, trim tabs, and a 200 Suzuki, the MSRP for a loaded version like we tested runs $103,361. This boat is a deal in today’s boat market, dear reader.

For comparison, I suggest you look at the Sportsman Open 212 ($89,495 with a F200XSA2 Yamaha in white). It’s a new 2025 model, and though it’s console head compartment is not as large as that of the Sea Pro, it comes with a tall, tempered-glass windshield, which I prefer to the short standard windshield aboard the Sea Pro.

In characterizing the Sea Pro 225FLX Sandbar it may be easy to say that it is a good boat for the money. I’ll just say I think it is a good boat. Check it out for yourself and let me know what you think.

Room is always at a premium on angling boats. For 2025, the Alumacraft Competitor line of aluminum multispecies boats offers a clever idea that expands the aft casting deck without compromising cockpit space or making the boat longer. The X-Pods on either side of the outboard extend the aft deck by 16 inches. This gives the angler more foot room and makes it easier to fish around the motor. Each X-Pod also incorporates stowage space. The X-Pods are not an extension of the running surface but do act as fixed tabs to improve planing performance and handling in turns. The X-Pods are a feature of 12 new Competitor models, including the 22-foot-2-inch-long 205X Side Console we tested.

Competitor models also feature a new bow control center with a recessed well for the trolling-motor pedal, a phone holder with a USB port, and fishing-tool slots. The center panel is designed for gimble or recessed mounting of a display up to 12 inches. A handsome new molded dash area at the helm features a standard 7-inch Garmin EchoMap MFD for instrumentation, with room for two 12-inch graphs above the dashboard.

The bow livewell holds 21 gallons. A choice of three new Flex Module configurations is offered for the aft cockpit: the Flex 29 with a carpeted bench/step and a 29-gallon livewell, the Flex FSX with a pair of jump seats flanking a 30-gallon livewell, and the Flex 50 with a 50-gallon livewell. Full-length 13-inch-wide steps in the cockpit port and starboard make it easy to kneel and reach the water. The tops lift to reach stowage and the 46-quart cooler to starboard and 10-foot rod stowage to port. There’s additional rod stowage below the forward deck.

Alumacraft has not changed the revered Competitor running surface, which is slightly concave from keel to chine to help the boat better carve turns. The Alumacraft 2XB double-plated hull with a seamless one-piece bottom is designed to be durable and feel solid on the water. The Competitor 205X is rated for up to 400 hp, but the 250 hp Mercury on our test boat provided satisfying performance, hopping on plane in less than 4 seconds and holding plane at just 17.5 mph—ideal performance when the water is rough.

Overview

Robalo Boats are tough and stylish, offering optimal deck space for crew as well as top-shelf production quality at a modest price. The R257 dual-console punches above its class in performance, fishability and comfort.

The R257 proves a seriously fishable saltwater SUV that’s ready for diving, snorkeling, cruising and beachcombing—and, yes, it offers some luxury too.

The R257’s ride is smooth thanks to its deep, wave-cleaving deadrise. Well-positioned chines aid in crisp turns, and available Helm Master joystick steering makes mooring easy. The full-maneuverability joystick system holds the boat when waiting for your turn at the fuel dock too.

Interior and Accessories

A wraparound windshield and a walk-through wind dam protect the cockpit from the elements. Wraparound bow seating is deep and safe, providing comfortable bolsters and rails all the way around. Standard silicone fabric upholstery is inherently UV- and mildew-resistant, supple, cool to the touch, and  stain-repellent. We love the look of the multiple textures and colors, complementary to any of the almost infinite color schemes available. The premium upholstery makes the custom captain’s chair even more luxurious and cool to the touch, and the bolster gives a better view when docking

For the No. 1 companion, a portside convertible lounge has a backrest that adjusts to form a single forward-facing seat with a back-to-back aft-facing seat. Flip the backrest forward for an aft-facing lounge. Behind the captain’s bucket seat is an entertainment galley with sink and  pullout shower. A fold-away transom seat adds comfortable seating on the fly.

For anglers, there’s a 30-gallon livewell with a high-capacity pump that will keep hundreds of baits alive all day. Rod holders surround the cockpit, with six on transom, one on each gunwale and six in the hardtop to keep extra rods ready. Two 50-gallon fish boxes under the deck are macerated, and pulling your catch into them will be easy through either the transom door or the portside boarding door.

The Robalo R257 is hardcore fishable, with durable crew-pampering features and reliable outboard power.

Overview

If, like me, you dozed through Ancient Greek Mythology class, Panacea was the goddess of all cures and solutions. And that is the perfect name for the new Intrepid 41. This big center-console will satisfy every one of your boating wishes and desires.

Engines

If speed is at the top of your boating checklist, get a tie-down for your hat. This new Intrepid easily nailed 61-plus mph, and that was in a not-so-friendly Gulf Stream. Our test boat boasted a trio of the standard Mercury V-10 400s clamped to the transom.

You can check the option box for twin Mercury V-12s, punching out 600 hp each, but warn your guests to bring extra sunglasses to replace the ones that will blow off their faces.

Interior and Accessories

You can bring a whole bunch of those friends too because the 41 Panacea is a party animal. An outdoor galley behind the helm seats features a grill to torture steaks, an Isotherm fridge to keep beverages chilled, a sink, and a pull-out cooler in case the fridge floweth over.

If you want to spend the night aboard with your significant other after blasting across to Bimini, Catalina or Nantucket, the spacious cabin sports 6 feet, 3 inches of headroom, a comfortably sized V-berth with convertible table, and a human-size enclosed head with shower and electric toilet. There’s even a mini galley (microwave/sink/fridge), so you can have your morning coffee and croissants without leaving the cabin.

But will the 41 Panacea fish? Oh, yeah! The twin lighted livewells in aft corners of the cockpit have side windows so that you can check the health of your pilchards or pogies, macerators for sending off those baits that didn’t make it to the hook, five rod holders across the transom (more along the rails), and a hardtop braced for outriggers. Foldout seating is shaded by the pullout awning hidden in that hardtop and fish boxes that reside below the cockpit sole.

You say you’re a diver? The oversize hull door to port (an Intrepid invention) is large enough to easily handle chubby divers and a big fish. A boarding ladder flips out from a hatch in the cockpit floor adjacent to the door.

Intrepid 41 Panacea helm seating
The skipper and two companions get lush seats with great lumbar support. Courtesy Intrepid Powerboats

The styling is the highly recognizable straight and rising Intrepid sheer that looks like it’s going fast at anchor. The rakish hardtop, with full-height windshield and recessed speakers and lighting, adds to the swept-forward look.

Intrepid has perfected its high-speed, high-efficiency single-step hull, which aerates the running surface, allowing you to run faster, longer and farther. This is balanced by a trio of strakes on each side to fine-tune tracking and lift, plus hard chines that throw aside spray and stabilize the boat at trolling speed. Add to that the optional Seakeeper 3 gyrostabilizer, and the 41 is fire, as the kids say.

Intrepid 41 Panacea bow seating
There’s wraparound seating forward with a high-low table that retracts flush into the floor. Courtesy Intrepid Powerboats

As you’d expect in a go-fast boat, the skipper is awarded every desire. We applauded the comfortable seat with great lumbar support, as well as identical companion seats on either side. The no-distortion windshield ends at the stylish dash with twin 22-inch Garmin monitors and rows of Bocatech push-button switches for the various systems. Besides the Mercury Joystick Piloting for Outboards, the Vetus bow thruster aids in easy docking.

But this is only half the 41 Panacea, which also aspires to be a luxurious bowrider forward of the helm. Wide walkways lead to twin sun pads with hinged backrests atop the cabin, and the seating wraps around a high/low table that retracts electrically flush with the floor. Pop-up cleats and an underhatch Maxwell horizontal windlass keep the foredeck clear, and anchoring can be controlled both at the windlass and from the helm. A thoughtful touch: a washdown pump in the anchor locker to get rid of muck.

Speaking of uncluttered, the transom platform is a delight. Most outboard boats have a tangle of wires and hoses to trip anyone who ventures onto the platform, but all this maze is hidden below the Intrepid platform. You can step aboard from a dock, stroll safely across the platform in front of the Mercurys, and enter the cockpit through the starboard-side transom door.

When it comes to service, an oversize hatch allows you easy access to the undercockpit Paguro 8.5 kW genset, as well as the optional Seakeeper 3 gyrostabilizer.

Shopping around? Check out the Cigarette 41 Nighthawk ($1,279,000), with similar bad-boy looks, quad Mercury 500s and a more Spartan interior. A more conservative-looking boat that’s a bit longer is the Tiara 43LS ($1,560,425 base price), which hits 56 mph with twin 600 hp Mercury Verado outboards.

Underway, I loved the 41 Panacea, upgraded using customer comments about the now-retired 40 Panacea with a new and wider hull. Even Aunt Edna is going to grin when you grab the Brodie knob on the fat 14-inch stainless-steel wheel that begs you to spin doughnuts. Put the hammers down, and the Panacea pops onto plane in just 5.3 seconds. Launch off a Gulf Stream graybeard, and the Panacea lands softly, begging for more.

The Panacea, as Greek gods know, is truly a boat for all reasons.

How We Tested

  • Engines: Triple Mercury 400 hp V-10 Verados
  • Drive/Prop: Outboard/16.8″ x 19″ Revolution X 4-blade stainless steel
  • Gear Ratio: 2.09:1 Fuel Load: 275 gal. Crew Weight: 650 lb.

High Points

  • I love the hidden hand grip that makes boarding through the hullside door safe and easy. Thoughtful, functional and executed with élan, it’s the type of thing upon which Intrepid has built its reputation.
  • Electric backrests installed in the forward lounges allow guests to sit up or recline without requiring the captain to stow or retrieve a removable backrest.
  • Gutters in the deck hatches are deep enough to handle Biblical quantities of rain or energetic use of the washdown hose, and keep gear protected from moisture and corrosion.

Low Point

  • The white dash reflects into the windshield, creating distracting “ghosts” and glare. I’d prefer a dark helm top for this reason.

Grady-White’s Coastal Explorer series is so popular, it recently expanded with a 231CE to fill in behind the larger 251 and 281. The 231, though shorter, shows little sacrifice in luxury and fishability. It is fully featured and easily trailerable.

Grady-White utilized the console, lean bar and more from the 251, offering plenty of space for navigation electronics and seating—all protected by a large hardtop that is outrigger-ready.

Fishermen are further equipped with a 25-gallon livewell and an aft casting deck with built-in jump seats and cushioned backs. These swivel, offering access to the boarding platform, which is equipped with a boarding ladder. The design of the transom further accommodates two Power-Poles or Raptor shallow-water anchors.

Rod storage is ample, with four rocket launchers in the lean bar, four more in the hardtop, plus two more optional rod hangers under each gunwale to keep tackle handy and safe. Raw- and freshwater spigots are conveniently located to wash the deck, tackle or sandy feet.

There is a roomy, inviting changing room below the console with a standard portable head. On the front of the console is a long jump seat big enough to stretch out. There’s a step to the casting deck sized generously for two or more anglers, but it can convert quickly to an enormous sunning lounge for two or three. Electrically operated seatbacks at the bow fold down to provide casting-deck space.

Yamaha’s 250 hp outboard, with integrated power steering, makes this a great handling package with a top speed of just under 50 mph. Its maneuverability at speed is enhanced by Yamaha’s power steering. At rest or at trolling speeds, its stability makes it an excellent casting platform that provides secure footing to battle fish. It settles gently under the shifting weight of the crew, making accurate casts to mangroves or dock pilings easy.

The 231 Coastal Explorer is ideal for coastal exploring and presents owners with features and fun not always available in a compact bay boat.

High Points

  • Transom is designed to accept two Power-Poles.
  • Transom seatbacks swing inward or forward for transom access.
  • Bow seating with electrically adjustable backrests.

Garnering nods of appreciation from anglers as well as boaters seeking luxury and performance alike, Formula’s 457 CCF delivers the goods.

On the angling front, its huge self-bailing cockpit is fitted and equipped to battle the big ones. Boarding doors port and starboard swing on massive chromed stainless-steel hinges, and twin blue-gelcoated livewells grace the transom. Look up to see Gemlux 22-foot outriggers. The cockpit rigging station/wet bar offers a slide-away mezzanine bench, full Corian countertop/rigging station, removable cutting board, sink, Plano tackle-box organizer, drawer storage and more. The dual-voltage drawer refrigerator-freezer can chill bait, drinks or both. There’s plenty of insulated fish boxes underfoot. Opt for the upper station, complete with controls, electronics and its own hardtop. The optional SureShade thwarts hot sun.

In the bow, find a deep, plush lounge as well as dual chaises on the front of the console. Under the curvaceous hardtop, find two rows of seating. Air conditioning powered by the standard genset keeps these cool. Or allow breeze in with the standard electric-opening windshield. For wind protection, the 457 CCF’s rigid side wings deploy between the console and the hullsides to keep wind at bay.

Belowdecks, we found designer style and a ton of function. This cabin, with an enclosed head and shower, is well-lit, air-conditioned and offers plenty of headroom.

At the helm, teak accents blend with flush-mounted big screens. Air conditioning is ducted here, and its raised location provides excellent visibility.

The 457 CCF runs on Formula’s FAS3Tech hull, which proves quick, nimble, and adroit at smoothing the water. With its foam-filled, continuous molded structural grid, it feels solid underfoot. The triple 600s powering our test boat delivered 57 mph at wide-open throttle. Notably, these engines are super-quiet, making long runs easy on the ears. Mercury’s JPO joystick minimizes docking stress.

Seeking a boat that scratches the itch to fish and does so while satisfying your desire for top quality and luxury? Sea-trial a Formula 457 CCF.

With its spacious enclosed pilothouse, seakindly hull, impressive performance and extended range, NorthCoast’s 415HT is equally suited to trolling far offshore or cruising distant coastlines, with an impressive list of standard features that enhance the boat’s broad appeal.

Quad Yamaha 300 XSB outboards provide around 400 miles of range from 600 gallons of fuel through speeds between 28 mph and 45 mph. Pushing the throttles near our 55.1 mph top speed (hampered by 20-knot headwinds compared to Yamaha’s tested 57.6 mph max) still covers 300 miles from full tanks. Its V-bottom and flared hullsides cut seas and reduce spray, while the Seakeeper 4, which runs quietly from 12-volt batteries alone, flattens pitch and roll.

NorthCoast 415HT helm
There are dual 19-inch Axiom displays at the helm. Courtesy NorthCoast Boats

Navigating, even in fog or at night, is aided by radar, a plotter and FLIR, along with Raymarine’s ClearCruise augmented reality that overlays AIS traffic, GPS waypoints and more atop nav and video images on dual 19-inch Axiom displays, where YachtSense also monitors and controls ship’s systems.

In the enclosed pilothouse, dual overhead hatches, four large side windows and the aft bulkhead all open to catch a breeze. Or button them up, crank the 9 kW diesel generator, and chill in air conditioning. Abovedecks is a large high-low table and amply equipped galley center entertainment. A big cockpit includes standard aft-facing seating, tackle drawers, livewells, fish boxes, and both an aft transom door and side gunwale door. In addition to the long standards list, NorthCoast offers an optional Cruiser cockpit settee, as well as optional equipment such as outriggers and a rocket launcher for the fisherman.

Down below, the private master cabin features an island queen bed, while the aft cabin extends beneath the pilothouse sole and houses both a double bed and a separate single folding berth. The head includes a separate stall shower roomy enough to avoid using marina facilities. There is also a small settee, and storage is maximized throughout.

Whether you’re inclined to fish the offshore canyons or cruise the coast of Maine, the NorthCoast 415HT offers the versatility to help you do it.

High Points

  • Yamaha’s Helm Master EX joystick adds functionality with docking, station keeping, and various drift modes.
  • Both the queen bed forward and twin bed aft lift on gas struts to access storage compartments long enough for fishing rods or large enough for extended cruising provisions.
  • No wood—the FRP stringer grid is rot-free and foam-filled, helping provide USCG Level Flotation.
  • Pilothouse settee table adjusts height to serve meals, enjoy cocktails, create a comfy day bed or add overnight accommodations.

The new Pursuit OS 405 raises the bar on the long-popular OS 385 it supersedes in many ways. It starts with an all-new hull with 20 degrees of transom deadrise for soft running offshore (the OS in the name). Upping the ante from triple Yamaha 300s to triple Yamaha 450 XTO outboards, the OS 405 hits 55-plus mph, and cruises for 317 miles at 28-plus mph, sipping just 39 gph.

Under the OS 405’s extended hardtop are two rows of seats behind the large-pane windshield. Impressively engineered, the hardtop boasts two hatches for air and light, plus provisions for Rupp outrigger controls. From a Stidd seat, the captain views twin Garmin 22-inch multifunction displays, Zipwake trim control, a bow thruster and a Yamaha Helm Master joystick. The Stidd companion seat rotates to face the standard table and L-shaped lounge, which converts to a berth.

The cockpit, lined by rod holders, delights anglers with a 75-gallon refrigerated fish box, 50-gallon livewell, insulated deck lockers, and a bait-prep area with a sink and stowage. Two aft-facing seats plus a fold-down transom seat add all-day comfort, and a midcockpit galley handles alfresco meals with a grill. A custom-tuned JL Audio stereo system provides Hi-Fi audio. All cockpit seats feature Dri-Fast foam and mesh backing to ensure dry comfort. Forward, enjoy the padded chaise-style lounges with adjustable backrests. Take our advice and order the optional sunshade.

Belowdecks, find a Memory Foam queen berth forward that folds into a salon lounge electrically. The enclosed head features a separate stall shower, and the midcabin (with door) features a full-size bed. The galley houses a two-burner cooktop, two-drawer fridge and a microwave.

Adding to the comfort underway, the standard Seakeeper 6 gyrostabilizer keeps the OS 405 stable at rest and underway, while the Fischer-Panda 9 kW generator keeps the blender running from a separate 31-gallon diesel fuel tank. The Pursuit Protection Plan includes a five-year hull and deck warranty, and five-year blister-free warranty. This boat’s got you covered.
